My client is a growing small business developing a novel hydrogen storage solution. They have recently completed a Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) funded hydrogen storage feasibility study and are now focused on developing the technology further using a prototype demonstrator as a stepping-stone to a full-scale hydrogen storage solution.


Job Brief
My client is looking for an experienced, multi-skilled, hydrogen systems engineer, reporting to the Engineering Programme Manager, to work on our hydrogen projects team. As a small company at the forefront of this new industry, the role will be varied depending on the nature of the active projects. As such, they are looking for an extremely dynamic and versatile person with an ability to work across disciplines, including project management, and find innovative approaches to solving novel problems. The key candidate will also be able to interface with industry experts to build a business winning consortium of partners to enable the successful demonstration and roll out of the technology.


This will be a challenging and rewarding role that spans a range of interesting disciplines including analysis, modelling, systems engineering, and project management. The ideal candidate will be very self-driven to work proactively across several areas of the technology, be able to learn fast and be comfortable working outside of their core expertise. An innovative, entrepreneurial attitude is crucial.


Depending on the experience of the candidate, key responsibilities will include:
Key Responsibilities
* Ensure health and safety considerations are integral to all design activities and project delivery.
* Work closely with the Commercial Team to define use-case requirements for hydrogen storage solutions.
* Create and maintain hydrogen storage systems requirements and Basis of Design.
* Be responsible for driving forward the systems design for both the prototype and full-scale system in line with use-case requirements.
* Take the lead role in the collaboration with external specialists. This may include pressure vessel manufacturers, design consultancies, civils engineering specialists and research/university establishments.
* Promote the company hydrogen storage solution at conferences, public events etc.
* Creation of Invitation to Tender (ITT) documentation leading to tender evaluation and supplier selection.
* Creation of robust work scopes for subcontractors and suppliers and management thereof.
* Lead Hydrogen focussed grant applications, administration, and reporting.
* Manage hydrogen storage technical and project risk, developing mitigation strategies for pre-identified or emerging risks.
* Hydrogen storage design optimisation. Understand the key design parameters that affect performance and cost. Take a lead in driving forward the systems optimisation accordingly.

Essential Requirements
* 5+ years' experience in a similar industry
* BEng or higher in engineering discipline, or other suitable physical science background
* Aptitude for systems thinking and creative problem solving
* Ability to steer design optimisation for improved system performance and cost
* High-pressure gas systems design experience
* Project management
* Report writing
* Component research, specification, and procurement
* Proven record of finding creative methods to explore complex analytical problems


Beneficial Skills
* Strong commercial understanding of energy storage markets and services
* Systems engineering experience within the hydrogen industry
* Practical hands-on experience in gas system assembly
* Electrical systems design
* Running FMEA, HAZID, HAZOP, etc
* Understanding of hydrogen as an energy storage solution
* Understanding of the Pressure Equipment Directive and associated standards
* Understanding of rock mechanics
