Summary


We now have the need for a highly motivated and enthusiastic person to join our dynamic friendly Radiology team at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Working 7.5 hour day shifts both morning and evening including weekends.

We are looking for a dynamic flexible individual to work as a Radiology Assistant at the John Radcliffe site. This is a role that contributes to the smooth running of the Radiology Department and the candidate will work closely with all staff, in particular Radiographers and Radiologists to provide a high standard of patient care. You will be required to work as a Radiology assistant in the front line of patient care, assisting with various examinations in different imaging modalities including CT , MRI and Ultrasound. You will be involved in coordinating patient transfer to and from Radiology. Liaising with other departments and wards. You will be required to do some clerical duties using both Electronic Patient Record and the Radiology Information System.

The post is working a mixture of day and evening shifts and weekend working is required.
The candidate will be required to work weekends and bank holidays, on a rota system.

To contribute to the smooth running of the Radiology Department and to
work closely with all staff, in particular Radiographers and
Radiologists to provide a high standard of patient care. To meet the
requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), the Control of
Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations, the Data Protection
Act (1999) and the Ionising Radiation Regulations (1999) and Ionising
Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (2000), and any subsequent
legislation.


RESPONSIBILITIES
KEY RESULT AREAS
- Providing support to Radiographers and Radiologists performing
imaging procedures on different imaging modalities, for patients
referred to the Radiology department.
- Explaining to patients the preparatory requirements for the
examination and administering these as required, e.g drinking of
contrast media.
- To undertake the care and reassurance of patients undergoing
imaging procedures
- Attending to patients needs, including chaperone duties, manual
handling and helping dress/undress where necessary.
- To perform intravenous cannulation in line with Trust and
Departmental protocols as appropriate (training will be provided).

- Preparation of contrast agents for radiological examinations as and
when required.
- Observing patient confidentiality at all times.
- To undertake the transfer of mobile x-ray equipment and accessories
within the department, and throughout the hospital, as required.
- Liaising with ward staff to co-ordinate patient transfer both to and
from the Radiology Department.
- To undertake the transfer of patients between wards and
departments within the hospital.
- To maintain high standards of cleanliness of equipment and
accessories, in addition to keeping examination rooms and changing
areas clean, tidy and supplied with linen and relevant disposable
items, (e.g. syringes, needles).
- Carrying out clerical duties when required including use of the
Electronic Patient Record system, Radiology Information System, and
the Picture Archive and Communication System, (training will be
provided).
- Contributing to the department's Quality Assurance and Audit
programmes, if required.
- Participating in all relevant in-service training programmes.
- Taking part in the appraisal system.
- Participating in weekend and Bank Holiday rotas.
- To work in all Radiology departments on the John Radcliffe site,
including the Children’s Hospital and the West Wing, when required.
- To participate in any Major Incident and follow the Radiology
department policy.
- Undertaking any other tasks and duties, which may be delegated form
time to time.

COMMUNICATION
1. To communicate effectively and appropriately with all users of the service
across all age groups and abilities.
2. Observe confidentiality and conform to the Data Protection Act.
3. Establish and maintain close and harmonious relationships with Medical
and Nursing staff.
Physical Effort & Working Conditions
The post holder will:
1. Be subject to exposure to ionising radiation on a frequent / regular basis.
Such exposure will be managed according to departmental protocols.
2. Have frequent use of VDU equipment on a daily basis.
3. Have regular exposure to distressing and emotional situations on a daily
basis e.g. caring for the critically and terminally ill
4. Have frequent exposure to body fluids e.g. blood, urine and etc and
infection risks and occasional exposure to lice and/or fleas.
5. Be required to position and manoeuvre patients and equipment on a
daily basis. In any clinical situation, patients may be ambulant, in a
wheelchair, stretcher/bed. Transfer to an x-ray table is often required.
Movement of wheelchairs, stretcher/bed over short distances throughout
the working day or night is required.
6. Demonstrate an ability to concentrate for prolonged periods and to apply
accuracy and attention to detail even in adverse conditions

RISK MANAGEMENT
The management of risk is the responsibility of everyone and will be achieved within
a progressive, honest and open environment.
Staff will be provided with the necessary education, training and support to enable
them to meet this responsibility.

and should make themselves familiar with the ‘local response’ plan and their role
within that response.


RESPONSIBILITIES FOR HEALTH & SAFETY

The post holder is responsible for ensuring that all duties and responsibilities of this
post are carried out in compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974,
Statutory Regulations and Trust Policies and Procedures. This will be supported by
the provision of training and specialist advice where required.

INFECTION CONTROL

Infection Control is everyone’s responsibility. All staff, both clinical and non-clinical,
are required to adhere to the Trusts’ Infection Prevention and Control Policies and
make every effort to maintain high standards of infection control at all times thereby
reducing the burden of Healthcare Associated Infections including MRSA.
All staff employed by the ORH Trust have the following key responsibilities:

-Staff must wash their hands or use alcohol gel on entry and exit from all
clinical areas and/or between each patient contact.
- Staff members have a duty to attend mandatory infection control training
provided for them by the Trust.
- Staff members who develop an infection (other than common colds and
illness) that may be transmittable to patients have a duty to contact
Occupational Health.
