Summary


An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 4 Clinical Trials Assistant to join the dynamic trials team at the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Unit (SBRU). The early phase trials team is involved in the development of new anti-cancer medicines for oncology patients. The candidate will work closely with the multi-disciplinary-team to provide the sponsors with accurate data from patients who are participating in a new cancer drug trial.

The role will primarily be based in the clinical area, within the SBRU, under the supervision of the nursing team, but will also involve sample processing and administration duties. The candidate can expect a busy and varied working day and will need to ensure planning, organisation and attention to detail are prioritised.

The candidate will need to possess the following skills:

-be knowledgeable (or willing to learn) and experienced in research and oncology

-possess basic clinical skills

-possess the ability to multi task and work under pressure

-have excellent time management, communication and organisational skills

-be willing and skilled to manage and co-ordinate non-complex studies

-be adaptable and willing to work in a varied role

-willingness to undergo regular trial specific and research training

-have good knowledge of Microsoft office packages/IT skills

The candidate will work in a fast paced environment and will be part of a supportive team working closely together who aim to provide the next generation of cancer treatments. The opportunity to learn and develop is greatly encouraged and new ideas will be welcomed.

- support the wider clinical team in carrying out research and clinical care

- liaising and communicate on a daily basis with the MDT

- attend MDT or similar meetings in research and standard of care

- management & co-ordination of trials

- management of patient visits according to specific trial protocols

- perform simple clinical procedures, vital signs, ECG’s etc according to trust policy and trial protocols

- to centrifuge, process and store samples

- to arrange the shipment of samples to central laboratories in the UK and worldwide

- accurate recording of information/documentation

- inputting data into the required IT systems

- the development of study specific worksheets to be used as source documentation

- manage and input collected data using trial specific software

- attend regular study specific training sessions (SIV, amendment update training) when required

- keep research related mandatory training/qualifications up to date

• Coordinate and improve trial communication throughout Multi-Disciplinary Teams throughout the Trust
• Maintain effective communication with patients, carers and professional to ensure service delivery
• Communicates effectively with research team and study participants and their family members. Is able to provide patients with information, which may be complex or sensitive, regarding their participation in the clinical trial and the care that they will receive as a consequence of that
• Facilitate the recruitment of research participants in to low risk research studies, which is likely to include quality of life and tissue sample collection studies
• Support the research delivery team to successfully deliver a broad ranging portfolio of clinical trials
• Coordinate and supervise housekeeping duties and ordering of all clinical trial supplies
• Co-ordinate the collection transfer and storage of blood / tissue samples in accordance with the Human Tissue Act 2004 as required by trial protocol
