37 Monday to Friday, normal working hours
This opening assignment is for 3 months
City: LEICESTER
Work as part of a team to deliver a best value, customer-focussed service throughout Leicestershire and occasionally, surrounding counties. You will work flexibly, efficiently and effectively to maintain highways, footpaths and structures in accordance with statutory requirements.
Activities included in this job specification are: Quick Response; General Maintenance; Drainage; Road-mender, Gully Emptying, Camera Van, occasional Construction and Surfacing.
Key Responsibilities


Undertake various maintenance works following safe working procedures, and using equipment and power tools.
Take part in a Standby rota to provide out of hours cover, receiving instruction to attend sites and making the area safe prior to permanent solutions being put in place.
Support the Supervisor or Site Team Leader
Carry out duties associated with Highway Works as directed by the line manager or senior person on site
Comply with all Health and Safety legislation, Traffic Management requirements and Operational Highways safety and quality procedures to ensure personal safety and that of colleagues and the general public. To comply with all Quality Management Systems, quality procedures and working practices.
Maintain training records in accordance with the requirements of the personal development process.
Comply with all authority and departmental policies, management systems, procedures and working practices (especially in relation to Health and Safety procedures).
Comply with risk assessments and safe working practices, ensuring a safe working environment, having regard to statutory requirements such as Health and Safety, COSHH Regulations and Driver’s Hours Regulations.
Offer advice and guidance to less experienced operatives when working together in a mature manner to help them increase their skills and knowledge.

Qualifications:


NVQ 2 in Highways Maintenance or similar
Skilled Road-worker Trades Test Assessment
New Roads and Streetworks Act (NRSWA) Qualification (Operative)
Accredited and relevant H&S Training Records and Certification (e.g. NPORS plant operator, Appointed Person, etc).
Valid driving licence





Knowledge:


Extensive knowledge of construction specifications, materials, compaction and workmanship requirements.
Extensive knowledge of safe working practices when using plant and machinery
Construction Health, Safety and Environmental requirements and safe working procedures
Legislation including driver’s hours, PPE and manual handling
Chapter 8 Traffic Management Regulations

Experience:


Working in a highways or civil engineering environment
Use of information technology (eg personal computer, PDS, mobile phones etc) in a work-related context

Skills & Abilities:


Core communication skills both written and verbal
Able and willing to work with everyone in the team
Able to use own initiative in planning and prioritising
Able to respond confidently to customers & colleagues with understanding & diplomacy whilst maintaining an objective & professional stance
Ability to remain calm & positive in challenging circumstances
Well organised and be able to prioritise own workload
Driving and operating specialist plant and use of rollers, compaction equipment and saws
