Summary

The post-holder will be required ensure that all work in the section (or sections) is carried out to high technical, scientific and professional standards. (e.g. Departmental Standard Operating Procedures, Trust and National Policies). To carry out a broad range of scientific and technical work, including that of a specialist nature, within the section/department, as required by the Chief Biomedical Scientist. To carry out testing on a range of bodily fluids and tissues many of which may be highly infectious and extremely unpleasant. Dealing with chemical and Biohazard spillages. The direct communication of urgent results to clinicians and other staff as required. To carry out a range of specialist tasks depending on the area in which you work, such as: Clinical Authorisation of test results and addition of interpretative comments as required to facilitate scientific and clinical understanding where appropriate Undertaking and managing the training of nursing and other staff who carry out ward based testing Developing and running external quality assurance schemes for ward based equipment where required Training of staff within the department Checking quality control and dealing with maintenance issues for ward based equipment Interpretation of microbiological cultures and test results To maintain expertise in the Microbiology Department by continuous professional development. To work independently as required. To attempt to solve analytical and technical problems encountered while working independently or identified by more junior staff. To ensure that all procedures are subject to internal quality control and that the quality achieved meets the standards required by the Chief Biomedical Scientist, Clinical Head of Department and Laboratory Service Manager. To use the information given by quality control to compare options for overcoming problems. To ensure that all procedures are subject to scrutiny via External Quality Assurance schemes. That any problems are identified and reported to the Chief Biomedical Scientist or Clinical Head of Department as appropriate. To identify, evaluate and develop new procedures and technologies with a view to incorporating them into their section(s) under the direction of Chief Biomedical Scientist. To perform such technical/scientific work as required within the department to ensure the adequate provision of Pathology services to patients and their Medical representatives. To undertake the recording and reporting of results in accordance with agreed departmental procedures. To interpret clinical information on request forms to ensure appropriate tests are carried out. To carry out technical validation of assays and investigations. To supervise and participate as required in all routine maintenance and emergency troubleshooting procedures associated with any instrumentation or equipment located within the department, or outside the department, as required by the Chief Biomedical Scientist. To liaise with equipment manufacturers and the Trusts Medical Equipment Management and Estates Departments to facilitate repairs. To have comprehensive knowledge of the full range of methods and techniques used within your section and other sections of the department. To investigate and take action to resolve problems with analytical methods and report these to the Clinical Head of Department or Departmental Chief BMS as appropriate; and where appropriate to the Clinical Risk Co-ordinator, Medical Devices Agency and commercial suppliers.
