Summary
This position has been developed to provide general haematology cover for the inpatient wards and the haematology Day Unit at The Royal London Hospital. Two post holders would switch between caring for patients with haemoglobinopathies and patients with inherited bleeding disorders or disorders of immune haematology.
These posts also provide training in general haematology together with laboratory diagnostics (coagulation, transfusion, blood films and bone marrow aspirates) and would suit a candidate with an interest in haematology planning to then apply for core medical or paediatric training.
There is no on-call requirement at present
This is a split post between the Department of Haemato-Oncology (SBH) and Department for Clinical Haematology (RLH) 6 months in each post.
Daily ward rounds
Reviewing inpatients, assisting the consultant and SpR with managing acutely unwell patients
Prescribing
Discharge summaries
Reviewing patients on day unit
Answering bleeps
Ordering and reviewing bloods and radiology requests for inpatients
Phlebotomy
Updating inpatient handover list
Attend MDTs
Attending medical handovers
Assisting in bone marrow procedures and training to complete independently
Attending outpatient clinics and completing clinic letters
Audit and Quality improvement
Exposure to examining blood films and bone marrows under supervision
