More detail about the role The Royal Devon Head and Neck Centre is the designated cancer centre supporting the regional cancer network with a population of 1.1 million (North Devon, East Devon, South Devon and Somerset). This is a high-volume centre providing surgical treatment to approximately 220 to 240 patients per year via a weekly regional Head and Neck MDT and a Combined Head and Neck Clinic, both centred in Exeter. The Head and Neck service has become increasingly busy over last five years due to the rapidly expanding population in the South West. The full range of surgical treatments for Head and Neck cancers are provided for, including transoral robotic surgery and 3D planning. A high volume of microvascular reconstruction cases are carried out by a team of reconstructive surgeons, with a low flap failure rate. Cases of osteoradionecrosis are also treated by the team. Should the appointee have a sub-specialist interest in H&N, they would join the close-knit H&N MDT. There is a Joint Orthognathic Clinic occurring weekly to discuss and plan orthognathic cases. This is attended by the existing Orthognathic Surgeon and one of the three consultant orthodontists and their trainees. 3D orthognathic surgical planning is carried out using Synthes/Materialise to construct the surgical splints for all orthognathic cases, with the support of the on-site Maxillofacial Laboratory. Orthognathic Surgery is carried out in Wonford Main Theatres, with inpatient recovery on Otter Ward. It is anticipated that the should the new appointee have a sub-specialist interest in Facial Deformity and Orthognathics, they would share this orthognathic workload. The post is based on the Wonford site of the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, where inpatient and outpatient accommodation is situated. The Combined Maxillofacial Unit for North and East Devon is presently covered by the four consultants who are primarily based in Exeter. There is on call commitment on a 1:4 weekday & 1:6 weekend rota. The weekend consultant on call cover is shared between the Royal Devon and Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, but based in Exeter. A job description and person specification can be obtained via our website or via NHS Jobs on www.jobs.nhs.uk. To apply, you must submit a completed application form which should be submitted online on NHS Jobs. Interested candidates are encouraged to contact Mr Mike Esson, Clinical Lead for OMFS on (01392) 402216. Further information can be obtained by contacting our HR Department on Exeter (01392) 404556.
