Summary
We are looking to appoint a Senior Clinical Fellow (SCF) for the Department of Trauma and Orthopaedics as a 1 year post.
The appointed post-holder will work within the middle grade tier of the trauma and orthopaedic team at Walsall Manor Hospital for a 1 year post. There may be the opportunity to extend the post at the end of the term. This will depend upon staffing vacancies and satisfactory progress by the SCF.
The post holder’s role can be adapted to suit the individual interests and training needs of the candidate, but will include the trauma and elective service encompassing operative and clinic sessions and participation in an oncall rota.
The post-holder will work in collaboration with the trauma and orthopaedic multi-disciplinary team to provide a high quality, progressive and professional trauma and elective orthopaedic service across a broad range of orthopaedic sub-specialties. The appointee must be able to demonstrate experience in fracture clinic, managing a oncall trauma service at middle grade level and a spectrum of trauma and orthopaedic surgical procedures.
The appointed post-holder can expect to work closely with an assigned clinical supervisor and have the opportunity to complete appropriate work based assessments.

To be eligible for these posts you must possess a primary medical degree registerable in UK together with MRCS exam success. Post holders should also possess a minimum of 2 years full time post graduate training or equivalent experience and competencies and full GMC registration.

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides a first class integrated acute and community healthcare service within the West Midlands serving a population of 260,000 residents. £50m has been invested in healthcare services over the last 12 months across the hospital estate which includes two new, state-of-the-art MRI scanners, the creation of a new 22 bedded Intensive Care Unit a new Obstetric Theatre and expansion of the Neonatal Unit.
The Trauma and Orthopaedic Department at the Manor Hospital, Walsall comprises 54 adult beds on 2 modern wards, one designated to Trauma the other for Elective Orthopaedic cases. There are 14 paediatric beds shared with other surgical specialties. There are 3 modern well equipped theatres with laminar flow designated for Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery tow which have been newly refurbished.
The department provides a varied and wide experience in Trauma Surgery and practically all spheres of elective orthopaedics.

The SCF will be expected to participate in local audits and Quality Improvement projects. They will be given allocated CME time to assist with above activity. They will be supported to submit their work as posters or publications in various national/ international meetings and journals.
Formal training in quality improvement is available in the trust and the SCF will be expected to complete this training within the first few months in the job to improve their understanding of quality improvement.
There will be opportunity to present at mortality and morbidity meetings, within T&O or at the monthly quality meetings.
KEY DUTIES OF THE POST
Trauma and Orthopaedic sessions as per the needs of the service
Cover the ‘second oncall’ trauma rota.
PROPOSED JOB PLAN
Shift pattern
It will be a 1:10 rota with a mix of day shifts (0830-1700),
Twilight shifts (1600-0000),
Long days (0800-2100) and
Night shifts (2000-0900). The SCF will be expected to do some weekends as well.
In case of future Covid surges and/or winter pressures, the rota may be changed at short notice to accommodate the workload.
The above job plan is flexible in terms of days and theatre lists this can be discussed with the clinical director.
