Summary


We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated Community Maternity Support Workers to join our existing team. You will be part of the Community and Continuity of Care teams . The successful applicants will need to be flexible and adaptable, working weekends and bank holidays. The shifts will be predominantly short shifts.

The Community Maternity Support Worker (MSW) will work as a member of the Midwifery Team in the delivery of safe care to women and their babies, within the Hospital & Community setting.












The MSW will carry out a defined range of duties delegated by the registered member of the multidisciplinary team. They will work with minimal supervision and use their initiative, on a frequent basis to assist in the planning, delivery, evaluation and implementation of agreed programmes of care which will involve direct care to women, their partners and babies.

The post holder will ensure that women and babies receive safe, individualised and effective standards of care by following care plans as directed by the registered Midwife and will report any concerns or changes in the condition of the woman and baby appropriately.

Duties and responsibilities for the role will be discussed and agreed on a daily basis with the midwife in charge with communication channels open throughout the day for further advice and support.

The MSW will provide day to day admin and organisational support to the team of midwives they work with.

To support midwives to ensure all women receive optimum care.

To implement a plan of care devised by a midwife, to pregnant women, postnatal women and new born babies, within the hospital setting (the level of responsibility for which will depend on the competence of the individual and the discretion of the supervising midwife).

Perform a range of delegated patient duties including the recording of patient Details.

Job Purpose

The scope of the practice of Maternity Support Workers is formally set out by the Royal College of Midwives in their document “The roles and responsibilities of MSWs” RCM Position Statement 2010. They are directly transcribed into this Job Description.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

To provide support wherever the need is greatest within the community setting, acting autonomously in the delivery of patient care. Support includes:

Care and support of women, babies and their families

Developing positive relationships with families, parents and carers

Supporting new mothers in the care of their new born babies, including the provision of emotional and physical care within the postnatal period.

Supporting individuals during and following clinical/therapeutic activities.

Support individuals who are distressed.

Support professional advice to help parents interact with and take care of their newly born baby/babies.

Supporting Breastfeeding mothers and babies.

Providing individual support to vulnerable mothers and families

Manage and organise time and activities to support and meet the needs of individuals.

To promote health and wellbeing of mother and baby through parent education and health promotion.

To empower women and their families to make their own decisions about health and choices.

Clinical Responsibilities

To undertake safe phlebotomy practice as requested by the midwife on pregnant and post natal patients.

Work autonomously performing blood sample procedures including Glucose Tolerance Testing.

At the request of the midwife, perform and record physiological measurements within the remit of the MSW role and report accurately to the midwife, the assessment undertaken.

Obtaining samples at the request of a midwife, including wound swabs, eye swabs, urine specimens, MRSA swabs, stool samples and sputum specimens.

To perform new born blood spot on babies between day 5 and 7 with informed consent from the parents.

To weigh new born babies as per guideline and calculate % weight loss.

Discuss all deviations from normal with a Registered Midwife who will advise on plan for further management.

To undertake flu immunisations on pregnant women during flu vaccination season after relevant training.

Communication

To communicate with relevant professionals in statutory and non-statutory organisations, using clear written and verbal means of communication.

To ensure records are legible, accurate, contemporaneous, signed, dated and are maintained in accordance with Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) guidelines and Trust Policy on Record Keeping.

To communicate with women and their families in a sensitive manner and to liaise with other professionals to meet the women’s identified needs.

To utilise effective systems of communication to ensure continuity of care across the community and hospital setting.

To use interpreters as needed, to enable families with English as a second language and those with sensory impairment to access the service.

To be able to communicate complex and sensitive information in an understandable format to women, their families and other professionals.

Leadership, Management and Team Working.

To implement and evaluate patient care by following agreed plans, policies, procedures and clinical guidelines including the delivery of specified activities which are agreed for the job role/purpose.

Contribute and participate effectively in team meetings and meetings with other agencies.

Contribute to the team working and planning of care in the children’s centres areas.

Contribute to the development of networks with other organisations.

Contribute to the development new ways of providing services that promote parental participation and ownership.

Safeguarding Children.

To work with parents to promote positive parenting in order to prevent child maltreatment.

To support the implementation of the child protection plans in collaboration with other health and social service professionals.

To support the contribution of the skill mix team to child protection practice To support vulnerable women and their families through the provision of appropriate community services.

To share information on a need-to-know basis with all relevant agencies Public Health and Health Promotion.

Contribute to the proactive development, implementation and the monitoring of public health and health promotion activities including own clinical work, work of team and empowering the local community in accordance with local and national plans.

Works with members of the team to reducing health inequalities, addressing particular needs of communities, who are likely to achieve poor outcomes.

Contribute to the provision of up-to-date information, education and support for parents as in the provision of parenting classes in partnership with other professionals

Contribute to the development of strategies with key agencies and parents to deliver the health promotion advice e.g. smoking cessation, post natal depression etc.

Liaises with other agencies for the provision of client care.

Ensures services provided are based on clear evidence to meet identified needs.

Contribute to the development of a notification and referral system so that all families are signposted to appropriate services.

Contribute to the establishment of systems for review of progress in meeting targets and objectives.

Contribute to the provision of reports as requested by the Community Coordinator and the Community Matron Working Collaboratively.

Supports the leadership and development of the midwifery teams so that they are able to function effectively.

Ensures effective communication systems in place to support community development initiatives.

Participates in collaborative activity with other partners and agencies to improve and develop service delivery using an evaluative tool.

Develops and sustains effective working relationships with other professionals and agencies.

completing an Accredited NVQ 3 (or equivalent) programme in Maternity Care.

To assume responsibility for and make arrangements to participate in on-site training programmes and ensure compliance with the training requirements of the Trust and Maternity Department.

To ensure annual appraisal undertaken with reference to Trust objectives and the Nursing & Midwifery Strategy.

To undertake Flu immunisation training.
