Summary

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHCT) is seeking to appoint a Cardiologist with subspecialty interest in advanced cardiac imaging. NHCT provides cardiology services for a population of 500,000. Our emphasis is on delivering a Trust wide approach with equal access to high quality services for both the inner city and rural populations.

NHCT is regionally in the forefront for cardiac imaging: We developed the first regional DGH cardiac MRI service in 2003, which is fully commissioned via national specialist commissioning. The service completed 1495 scans in 2021. We image on a 2016 Siemens Avanto at Wansbeck General Hospital (WGH), a 2013 GE Optima 360w at North Tyneside General Hospital (NTGH), a GE 1.5T Signa Voyager at Hexham General Hospital (HGH) and a 2015 Siemens Avanto used for in-patient scanning at the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital (NSECH). There are cardiac packages on all scanners and we report using circle CMR 42 software on dedicated stations at all four sites. We scan for all the standard indications, including performing 536 Regadenoson vasodilator stress in 2021, and take regional referrals from external requestors from Cumbria and south of the Tyne. The Northumbria Consultants are pivotal in the regional CMR group and in delivering regional and national MRI training courses.

To help develop Echocardiographic services including TOE and stress echo, and take a lead in echo governance with a strong emphasis on quality and education

To help develop Cardiac MRI services, including the increase of the stress MRI provision, and develop the trust profile within the regional group, supporting the development of education in MR in the region.

To help develop and expand cardiac CT services including the provision CT FFR and consolidate the TAVI CT service

The Full-time working week will consist of 10 Programmed Activities (PA’s), separated into:
1. Direct Clinical Care: Ward/On Call/Outpatient clinics
2. Supporting Professional Activities

NHCT is one of the UKs most dynamic, innovative and progressive Foundation Trusts. Northumbria has been in the top five national trusts for outpatient performance on the national surveys, and has been awarded the HSJ award for Provider Trust of the Year in 2013. The trust has been named “Best place to work in 2015” at the National Patient Safety Congress and awards Ceremony. Financially, NHCT has achieved extremely strong performance despite the increasing pressure on budgets, in contrast to many other Foundation trusts. There is a deep culture of governance embedded in the trust which includes rolling programmes for review of all deaths within the trust to identify learning points. The trust mortality reviews suggest that our care remains well above national average in avoidance of patient harm, and there is a deep commitment to patient safety and the avoidance of harm, which has been recognised nationally - NHCT has been one of the top forty trusts for six consecutive years as defined by the CHKS.
