Summary

Paediatric Emergency Medicine Junior Fellow

12 months fixed term

This job is designed for someone who firstly has Emergency Medicine experience at or above FY2 level and secondly is likely to be committed to the development of Paediatric Emergency Medicine as a career. They may already have a Paediatric or Emergency Medicine background and be interested in developing their skills further in our busy Paediatric ED.

The successful candidate will be given a timetable that covers rostered paediatric clinical duties on the shop floor and protected SPA time (possible to arrange a fixed day) set aside to work alongside our PEM Consultants. The further development of this role shows our commitment to PEM as an important and significant subspecialty and our dedication to improving the care of children and young people within our EDs and the wider Trust, as well teaching and training our staff. We pride ourselves on the close working links between Northwick Park and Ealing EDs (although the Ealing ED department does not see children) and with this in kind we will expect the PEM Fellow to support the sharing of learning on paediatric and safeguarding topics on both sites.

The successful candidate will be involved in all aspects of the care of patients in the Paediatric Emergency Department and on the Children’s and Young Person’s Observation Unit. They will have direct responsibility for the management of patients. An Emergency Medicine Consultant is present on the shop floor between 08:00 – 00:00 at Northwick Park to support management of patients and shop floor teaching. There is a Paediatric Consultant covering the Paediatric ED 10:00-22:00 during the week and 14:00-22:00 at weekends. Outside of these hours one of our Middle Grade doctors or Emergency Medicine Training Registrars is designated to undertake the ‘lead role’ for the ED and works in close liaison with the Paediatric Registrar and the nurse co-ordinator to ensure the department runs efficiently overnight.

The Clinical Fellow will join a team who are already committed to teaching and learning and improving the care we provide to our patients. The Fellow will help coordinate our weekly Paeds ED bite size teaching programme on a Thursday morning which is followed by a sim session using a related case. They will also attend the weekly psychosocial meeting and be integral to on-going development of the St Giles Trust youth worker service.
