Home, a place where you belong

Here at Home Group, we have a fantastic opportunity to join the team as a Housing Manager looking after a portfolio of homes across the town of Whitehaven in Cumbria.

Typical day as a Housing Manager

It’s Monday morning. You decide you are going to start your day working from home, you log on to your surface pro to check what appointments you have booked in for that day. You check if you have had any urgent messages that need dealt with before heading out onto your patch.

You arrive on your patch around 10:30 as you know you will catch the majority of your customers in after this time. You park at one side of your patch and walk to your visits as you like to bump into customers and make sure that your customers see that you are out and about and they can shout you over if they need anything.

You visit a customer to talk about an adaptation to their home as they have been struggling with getting up and down the stairs. You’ve reassured them that there are things that we can do and you agree to make a referral to an Occupational Therapist. The customer is delighted as it’s going to make their lives so much easier. Off to the next visit to check in with one of your customers who has been experiencing anti-social behaviour – The local Police Community Support Officer has joined you on the visit.

While out and about, you pick up a couple of general enquires and repairs whilst speaking to your customers. You decide to head into the office to catch up on some paperwork, action the queries you have picked up as well as to make a couple of calls to people about their rent account.

On your way home, you arrange to hand over the keys to a new property to a couple who are getting their first home in your patch!

This is just an example of one day. But you are in control of your own diary. No one day is the same and you have a range of responsibilities which you can read more about in the job specification at the bottom of this advert.

You Bring

  • Ideally, we’d love someone who has worked in Housing before. Maybe you’ve been a Housing Manager or a Housing Assistant or similar role. But Housing Experience is not essential. What we are really looking for is someone who is great with people and who is truly passionate about making a difference to peoples lives. We can teach you the housing stuff.
  • We want someone who can’t wait to get their teeth into their patch and make the area that they look after, somewhere that customers would be proud to live and call their home. You’ll need to be someone who is good at working with other agencies as you will need to build excellent relationships with your councillors, Police, support agencies as well as statutory organisations.
  • As you will be on your patch a lot, you will need to be able to drive and have access to a vehicle. But don’t worry about petrol, we cover that for you.
  • You’ll also need a Standard DBS check completed and we’ll pay for that too.

Our Team

You will be working for James Varah who is our Operations Manager. James started at Home Group in 2010 as an administration apprentice and has had a number of different roles within Home Group before securing the position of Operations Manager. James used to work at “The Original Factory Shop” and had no experience in housing whatsoever before coming to Home Group, but James knew that he wanted a job where he could make a difference!

You’ll join a team of 7 other Housing Managers all of whom will support you in your onboarding journey.

Great things happen when we can be ourselves at work. We want all our colleagues to be who they truly are here. Our internal diversity networks, peers and allies (Multicultural, LGBTQIA+ and Disability) support us all to be our best. Together we make Home Group a great place to work!

  • 34 days leave (including bank hols and a “me day” to use for whatever you fancy) increasing to 39, the option to buy 5 more, and time off for volunteering too!
  • The opportunity to explore a formal housing qualification.
  • Health cash plan saving you from £1140 per annum. We’ll cover your costs (and kids if you have them) towards dental, optical, prescriptions, alternative therapies and lots more.
  • Over 800 high street discounts on groceries, holidays and days out. Looking for a new phone, bike or car? Save money with us.
