Applications are invited for our Hand and Wrist Fellowship posts commencing 5thAugust 2024, October 2024 and 2ndApril 2025 based at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. The successful candidates will work within the Hand Unit with five Orthopaedic and five Plastic Surgery Hand Consultants.

The Hand and Wrist Fellows are part of the multidisciplinary Hand Team within a busy, dynamic and friendly department. We encourage a learning environment, with regular MDT and specialist Radiology meetings and support for taking the BSSH Hand Surgery Diploma. There are numerous BSSH approved tutors who can help and guide your preparation for the exam. We also encourage your involvement in audit and research and expect the successful candidates to present and publish such work carried out in the Unit.

This post does not have specific Royal College or Postgraduate approval; however prospective Deanery approval can be sought. This post would suit a senior Orthopaedic or Plastic Surgery trainee who is developing an interest in hand and wrist surgery and would like further experience in this specialist field. We welcome applicants from overseas.

The successful candidates will be exposed to a broad spectrum of elective hand and wrist surgery. There will also be exposure to a large volume of hand and wrist trauma including soft tissue reconstruction and complex wrist cases.

Roles and responsibilities
• Management of hand and wrist surgery cases in the outpatient setting (supervised)
• Management of hand and wrist surgery cases in the operating theatre (supervised)
• Presentation of cases at the weekly academic meeting
• Ward round review of in-patients and their on-going care
• Research involving hand and wrist surgery-based studies
• Teaching of junior staff
• Participation in daily morning trauma meetings

All duties must be carried out under supervision or within Trust policy and procedure. You must never undertake any duties that are outside your area of skill or knowledge level. If you are unsure you must seek clarification from a more senior member of staff.

This is not a training post and does not have specific Royal College or Postgraduate approval; however prospective Deanery, SAC + PMETB approval can be sought. This post would suit a senior orthopaedic trainee who is developing an interest in hand and wrist surgery and would like further experience in this specialist field. We would welcome applicants from overseas.

There will be an emphasis on more orthopaedic procedures (arthroscopic wrist surgery, joint replacements, carpal instability) on the elective side but equal exposure to soft tissue/ plastics procedures on the trauma side (flexor tendons, nerve repairs, soft tissue reconstruction).
