Summary

We are seeking to appoint two Consultant Anaesthetists to our friendly, supportive and dynamic Anaesthetic Department at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust. Post 1 is for cardiac anaesthesia, whereas post 2 is for cardiothoracic anaesthesia. Each post is full-time and comprises a total of 10 PA per week (8.0 DCC + 2.0 SPA). Both posts also have fixed sessions in non-cardiac/thoracic anaesthesia, and flexible sessions in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.

The appointee will be expected to work autonomously in their field of expertise to fulfil the clinical and non-clinical duties within the agreed Job Plan. The appointee will be responsible for the management of those patients under his/her care and be responsible with Consultant colleagues for the provision of both comprehensive elective and emergency anaesthetic services. The appointee will be required to devote substantially the whole of his/her time to the duties of the post according to the agreed Job Plan and give these priority at all times.

To understand the role in more detail, please read the attached job description and person specification documents.

Cardiac Services at NUHare provided by a team of 5 Cardiac Surgeons and 5 Cardiac Anaesthetists at City Hospital Campus. As a team, they provide the full range of adult cardiac surgery to Nottingham and the Trent Strategic Health Authority. The tertiary catchment covers Nottingham and surrounding districts, North Nottinghamshire, and parts of Lincolnshire and Derbyshire (population approx 1.3 m).

The inpatient cardiac surgery service at NUH takes place in the Trent Cardiac Centre. It is based around a 16-bed cardiac critical care unit and 36-bed ward. There are two cardiac catheter laboratories and two cardiac theatres. Thoracic surgery patients have access to the general intensive care and hospital HDU and are managed separately. Intensive care management is provided jointly by surgeons and anaesthetists, however the anaesthetic team take responsibility for leading a daily ward round and the work is supported by 6 specially trained nurse practitioners, who provide first line management of patients.

The Department of Anaesthesiaat NUH is friendly, supportive and cohesive. We provide in-patient and day-case anaesthetic services for a comprehensive range of elective and emergency surgical and non-surgical specialities at the City and QMC campuses. Our work is supported by Pre-operative Assessment, Acute Pain services and Critical Care services. At the QMC campus, we also provide anaesthetic services for the Major Trauma service and Emergency Department.

Each post has a draft job plan which best reflects our assessment of what the final plans will be, based on an initial 10 PA contract. Each job plan consists of regular Direct Clinical Care (DCC) sessions fixed in time, plus additional flexible DCC sessions which will be scheduled after agreement with the successful candidates. These duties are subject to review from time to time in the light of the changing requirements of the service. If alterations to the described duties are required these will be mutually agreed between the appointee, his/her Consultant colleagues and the Trust.

Any Consultant who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post on a part-time basis; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with Consultant colleagues. Anaesthesia provides a clinical service across both campuses. It is anticipated that the post holder may be reasonably asked to provide non-cardiac/thoracic sessions on either campus in the future as required by the service.
