Summary


The post-holder should provide a high-quality service to all respiratory patients, but with a specific focus on those with complex Asthma across St George’s Hospital. Work in close collaboration with consultants and other clinical colleagues lead the development in the delivery and expansion of an expert nurse -led asthma service across the organisation.

The post holder will contribute to advancing the body of knowledge through education, research and audit with the aim of improving access to treatment services.

Responsible for the development and provision of a specialist, evidence-based service to respiratory patients, with predominately complex Asthma symptoms.

To co-ordinate and facilitate effective pathways of care to deliver a seamless service for patients with complex Asthma optimising their safety and wellbeing.

To exercise a higher degree of personal and professional autonomy, drawing upon advanced knowledge and experience.

To ensure continuity of a high standard of evidence based respiratory care, assessing health, health related and nursing needs of patients, their families and other carers by identifying and initiating appropriate steps for effective care.

The post holder will have a key role in ensuring seamless, co-ordinated and timely approach to care for their patient group. The post holder will also provide leadership, management and a high level of clinical expertise in their specialism and contribute to the support, education and training for their team and other healthcare professionals.

The post holder will have a clear understanding of the strategic political view and challenges faced by primary and secondary care through the STP in meeting recommendations for the development of the service and will work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team in the planning and development of a more integrated service for patients across primary and secondary care.

The Respiratory Department offers a full range of general and specialist outpatient’s clinics both on site at St George’s NHS Trust, Tooting and at sister sites including Queen Mary Hospital, Roehampton, The Nelson Centre, Wimbledon and St John’s therapy Centre, Battersea. The respiratory department also supports in-patient management of largely unplanned patient presentations, including the emergency department, acute medicine and the respiratory ward.

The emphasis is very much on accurate diagnosis, planning and stabling care for patients with both acute and chronic respiratory diseases, utilising a multidisciplinary approach.

Their main site, St George’s Hospital in Tooting – one of the country’s principal teaching hospitals – is shared with St George’s, University of London, which trains medical students and carries out advanced medical research. St George’s Hospital also hosts the St George’s, University of London and Kingston University Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences, which is responsible for training a wide range of healthcare professionals from across the region.

The trust also provides care for patients from a larger catchment area in southeast England, for specialties such as complex pelvic trauma. Other services treat patients from all over the country, such as family HIV care and bone marrow transplantation for non-cancer diseases. The trust also provides a nationwide state-of-the-art endoscopy training centre.
