Summary
Are you passionate about archaeology and the historic environment?
We are seeking to appoint a Senior Archaeology and Heritage Consultant to our expanding archaeology and heritage team on a permanent basis. You will be out in the field and behind the scenes, working on diverse nationwide projects. Spanning flood risk and climate resilience schemes to renewable energy, Scheduled Monument condition surveys, historic landscape assessments, Listed Building Consents, and community engagement. No two days are the same. You will quickly gain exposure to historic environment challenges and play a key role in shaping landscapes.
As part of a friendly, multidisciplinary team, you’ll collaborate closely with specialists from across JBA. With opportunities to learn, contribute, and grow, you’ll develop your skills, gaining valuable experience in both planning and delivery. Our work is anything but ordinary and two weeks are never the same.
You will be joining an award-winning environmental and engineering consultancy which puts innovation, sustainability and resilience at the heart of its work. We are independent and staff-owned under a stewardship model which drives long term decision making and investment. We have offices in the UK, Ireland, Romania, India, Singapore and Australia. Our people are all important and we invest heavily in life-long learning and skills development. We support agile working which provides for greater flexibility with the way that we work.

The role:
You’ll work across the full historic environment spectrum — archaeology, historic buildings, and landscapes — with room to develop your voice, try new things, and make a real impact. This is more than just a job — it’s a chance to build a meaningful career, protect the past, and help shape a better, more resilient future.
The main responsibilities include:
• Working as part of the Archaeology and Heritage team in the delivery of a variety of nationwide projects.
• Preparation of desk-based assessments (DBA), heritage statements, written schemes of investigation, environmental statement (ES) chapters, Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), setting assessments and other formal written advice
• Baseline research including site and archives visits.
• Formulation of project strategies, including identifying potential heritage risks and opportunities, and contributing to project programmes
• Inputting to the design of projects and developments to minimise heritage impacts and realise enhancements or benefits.
• Preparing and submitting Scheduled Monument Consent and Listed Building Consent applications.
• Liaising with County Archaeological Advisers, Historic England, Conservation Officers, other stakeholders and internal project team members.
• Specifying and overseeing the implementation of programmes of fieldwork
• Preparation of tenders and fee proposals.
• Project management and implementing quality and health and safety principles.
• Assisting with developing new work business and contributing to the preparation of tenders and fee proposals.
• Managing and mentoring less experienced staff
The team member we are looking for:
We are looking for a hard-working, committed and enthusiastic individual, who can demonstrate effective communication and be able to work effectively as part of a team and independently. You will enjoy mentoring less experienced staff to develop their technical and professional skills. You should have experience of delivering archaeological and heritage assessments and the preparation of informed reports. Experience of the planning system or a specific area of relevant expertise would be important.
You will have previous experience of managing multiple projects and concurrent deadlines with the ability to manage competing demands. We are looking for someone commercially minded and confident when challenged, or to challenge others.
We are looking for an individual with:
• A degree, or equivalent, in archaeology, heritage management or other relevant subject.
• Membership of CIfA and/or IHBC or willingness to become accredited.
• Understanding of British archaeology, historic buildings and historic landscapes.
• Knowledge and understanding of heritage legislation across the United Kingdom.
• Understanding and experience of projects encompassing archaeology, historic buildings and historic landscapes
• Demonstrable experience of the design or specification of fieldwork and the management of its implementation, either directly or through supervising subcontractors
• Experience of preparing scopes of work, fee proposals, project costs or tender documentation
• Concise and clear report writing skills.
• Able to communicate effectively, with experience and confidence in talking to a variety of audiences.
• The ability to work both independently and within teams.
• The motivation and initiative to prioritise your own workload.
• The confidence to attend meetings and discuss information and recommendations with a mixed audience.
• Full driving licence.
Desirable attributes for the role:
• Knowledge and understanding of geoarchaeology and palaeoenvironmental archaeology.
• Knowledge and understanding of marine and inter-tidal heritage issues.
• Built heritage recording.
• Experience of assessing effects on the setting of heritage assets.
• Monument condition surveys and assessment.
• GIS (ideally QGIS) and CAD software packages.
Location:
Ideally the role will be located at our Edinburgh, EH14 4AP office within the Heriot Watt Research Park, although Glasgow G2 3BZ or Newcastle NE1 5JE can be considered for the right applicant.
