Overhaul Technician - Rail Rolling Stock
We are currently recruiting for 2 x Permanent Overhaul Technicians to join a leading client within the rail rolling stock industry at their modern overhaul facility in Manchester.
This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a growing and highly skilled engineering team working on the overhaul, refurbishment, and maintenance of critical rolling stock components. The successful candidates will play a key role in delivering high-quality overhaul activities within a safety-focused and technically advanced workshop environment.

The Role
As an Overhaul Technician, you will be responsible for the disassembly, inspection, overhaul, repair, and reassembly of a variety of rail components including:
- Powerpacks
- Bogies
- Wheelsets
- Associated mechanical and pneumatic sub-assemblies
Working to approved engineering procedures and technical specifications, you will help ensure components are restored to the highest standards of safety, reliability, and performance.
You will also contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and support the delivery of production targets within a collaborative workshop environment.

Key Responsibilities
- Carry out overhaul, inspection, assembly, and disassembly activities on rolling stock components
- Perform cleaning, blasting, paint preparation, and assembly tasks in line with quality standards
- Undertake basic mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic disconnection, testing, and reconnection activities
- Support measurement verification and NDT preparation activities
- Safely operate workshop equipment including:
o Overhead cranes
o Manipulators
o Hydraulic presses
o Torque tooling
o Precision measuring equipment
- Work in accordance with HSQE procedures, COSHH regulations, and safe systems of work
- Complete inspection records, job documentation, and digital maintenance system updates accurately
- Identify and report defects, damage, and non-conformities during overhaul activities
- Support lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, and 5S initiatives
- Maintain clean, organised, and safe working areas
- Participate in training, toolbox talks, and competency assessments
- Collaborate with engineering, production, and materials teams to achieve operational targets
- Promote a proactive safety culture across the workshop environment

What We're Looking For
Qualifications
- NVQ Level 3 or above in a relevant Mechanical or Electrical discipline
Experience & Skills
- Previous experience within rail, heavy engineering, automotive, aerospace, or similar technical industries
- Hands-on experience in overhaul, assembly, maintenance, or testing of large mechanical components
- Experience working with:
o Bogies
o Wheelsets
o Rotating equipment
o Heavy mechanical assemblies
- Competent using lifting and handling equipment such as overhead cranes and hydraulic presses
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, technical instructions, and inspection specifications
- Familiar with torque-controlled assembly and precision measurement techniques
- Basic understanding of electrical and pneumatic systems
- Strong awareness of workplace safety, COSHH, and industrial risk assessments
- Ability to work to production deadlines while maintaining high quality and housekeeping standards
