Summary

Key duties will include:

Carrying out work that ensures the council fulfils its local air quality management
responsibilities under the Environment Act, Clean Air Acts, Environmental Protection Act
and associated legislation with a focus on maintaining our air quality monitoring regime,
including sampling and overseeing continuous air quality analysers, passive diffusion tubes
and other air monitoring equipment.

Supporting the work of the Air Quality Education Projects Officer in their role of
implementing air quality initiatives.

Taking a key role to ensures the council meets its contaminated land responsibilities
under the Environmental Protection Act.

Investigating and responding to complaints relating to the Control of Pollution Act,
Environmental Protection Act, Noise Act, and any associated legislation in relation to
statutory nuisance from construction sites, entertainment sites, commercial and domestic
premises, audible alarms and other sources.

Managing the environmental permitting regime under the Pollution Prevention and
Control Act and associated legislation.
Carrying out work which fulfils our statutory duty under the Public Health (Control of
Disease) Act by arranging for the funeral of the deceased in the absence of next of kin and
recovering costs where appropriate.

Regulating private water supplies in accordance with the Water Industry Act and the
private water supply regulations including risk assessment and compliance with drinking
water standards.

Examining plans for proposed buildings, developments and licensing applications and
providing a statutory response on behalf of the environmental health team.

In conjunction with the Senior officer, lead on the environmental protection function for
events and representing the team at safety advisory groups.

Actively participating in the various county co-ordination groups.

Assisting with the preparation of reports as required by statute and for internal purposes.

Making presentations and giving evidence at committee hearings as required.

Preparing prosecution files for legal proceedings.

Undertaking other duties of a similar nature as assigned by the Public and Environmental
Health Manager.

For each of the environmental protection functions you will work within defined policies
and procedures, taking an appropriate approach to enforcement in accordance with our
corporate enforcement policy, serving notices, conducting formal interviews and preparing
prosecution files under the guidance of the Manager.
