Summary
Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) – Key Aspects of the Role
Safeguarding & Child Protection Oversight:
Lead on all safeguarding and child protection matters, ensuring concerns are identified, recorded, and responded to in line with statutory guidance. Act as the main point of contact for staff, students, parents, and external agencies regarding safeguarding issues.
Monitoring & Early Intervention:
Oversee the monitoring of students’ wellbeing, attendance, behaviour, and any indicators of risk. Ensure early intervention strategies are implemented and appropriate support plans are put in place for vulnerable learners, including those with SEN.
Staff Guidance & Training:
Provide advice, guidance, and regular safeguarding training to staff. Ensure all team members understand their responsibilities, recognise signs of abuse or neglect, and follow reporting procedures correctly.
Multi-Agency Coordination:
Liaise with external professionals such as social services, local authority safeguarding teams, schools, and support services. Represent the organisation in safeguarding meetings and ensure information is shared appropriately.
Policy Implementation & Compliance:
Maintain and implement safeguarding, child protection, and safer recruitment policies. Ensure procedures reflect current legislation and best practice, and that safeguarding records are accurate, secure, and up to date.
Student-Centred Support:
Ensure safeguarding approaches are tailored to individual student needs, particularly for those with SEN or additional vulnerabilities. Promote a safe, inclusive learning environment where students feel supported and able to raise concerns.
Common Requirements for DSL Role
Safeguarding Knowledge:
Strong understanding of safeguarding legislation, child protection procedures, and statutory guidance (e.g., Keeping Children Safe in Education).
Experience Working with Young People:
Proven experience supporting children or young people, ideally within an education or training environment, including those with additional needs.
Communication & Decision-Making Skills:
Ability to handle sensitive information, make informed safeguarding decisions, and communicate effectively with staff, families, and external agencies.
Record Keeping & Confidentiality:
Strong organisational skills with the ability to maintain accurate safeguarding records while ensuring confidentiality and data protection compliance.
