About the role
A young lady is looking for a female personal assistant to support her to access the community and enjoy social opportunities, as well as building her independence. She has multiple diagnosis’ including moderate learning disability, scoliosis, liver disease, Chron’s disease and Tetralogy of Fallot affecting her heart. The ideal PA will be caring, patient, reliable, and able to balance encouragement with awareness of her health vulnerabilities.
This lady enjoys listening to K-Pop music, watching tv series particularly medical themed such as Greys Anatomy, playing darts and pool as well as watching films such as Harry Potter. A shared interest in some of these is desired in a PA, as well as someone who is chatty and will enjoy time out with the client to enjoy social time with someone she can also see as a friend.
She has a dry sense of humour and can be unintentionally blunt with some of her communication, so it is important that you can understand this and enjoy some “banter” with the client rather than taking offense, as this is not done intentionally.
Key Responsibilities
As a personal assistant, you will be required to support in several ways as shown below, though this is not an exhaustive list and the role is flexible based on the needs of the client.
- Support her to access the community safely to places such as restaurants for lunch, shopping, swimming and somewhere to play darts and pool.
- Provide stability for the client and ensure her safety with her mobility challenges, ensuring the use of her crutch or wheelchair when required (collapsible to fit in a car boot).
- Monitor for early signs of fatigue or breathlessness and respond accordingly.
- Verbal prompting to ensure adequate food and drink intake.
- Follow strict environmental guidance due to immunosuppression including avoiding cold weather by staying indoors and avoiding the sun by staying in shaded areas when outside in warm weather.
- On rare occasions during a Chron’s flare-up, provide support to the client after an unexpected toileting accident. She is otherwise independent with toileting, so no regular personal care is required.
Essential requirements
- Female PA (exempt under Equality Act 2010 Schedule 9 for reasons of personal care).
- Patient, friendly, and able to build a positive relationship with the client.
- Good general health and not prone to frequent colds/illness (due to client’s immunosuppression).
- Understanding of (or willingness to learn about) Crohn’s disease, heart conditions, and immunosuppression considerations.
- Able to support slow walking pace and assist with wheelchair use.
- Reliable, punctual, and flexible.
Shift Pattern
Total of 9 hours per week across Tuesday’s, Wednesdays and / or Friday's. The client can be flexible on times and length of support on each day to allow the right personal assistant to be found.
