Summary
The Consultant Breast Radiographer will provide expert autonomous practice in breast imaging, including mammography reporting, ultrasound, and image-guided interventional procedures. They will manage a complex clinical caseload and act as a Responsible Assessor within the NHS Breast Screening Programme, delivering independent diagnostic decision-making at consultant level. They will play a central role in multidisciplinary team (MDT) working, contributing expert opinion to patient management and acting as a clinical leader across both screening and symptomatic breast services. The post holder will support service delivery, deputise for senior leadership where required, and help shape the strategic direction of the breast imaging service. A key aspect of the role is leading service improvement, audit, governance, and protocol development to ensure high-quality, safe, and efficient patient care. The post holder will also contribute to research activity and the implementation of evidence-based practice, supporting innovation within breast imaging services. In addition, they will have a strong educational remit, providing training, supervision, and mentorship to radiographers, advanced practitioners, and wider MDT colleagues, fostering workforce development and advanced practice capability. The role also requires advanced communication skills to support patients through complex and sensitive pathways, including diagnosis, consent, and disclosure of results. Finally, the post holder will ensure compliance with national standards, radiation safety regulations, and Trust policies, while contributing to a safe, patient-centred, and continuously improving service.
