Summary

1. Clinical Responsibilities/Key Responsibilities The appointee will be expected to share responsibility for the delivery of high-qualitycare to the patients presenting to the Department To support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff To provide on-call support to the general medical take out of hours. To attend out ofhours as agreed protocols. To remain contactable and available when on call To carry out ward rounds2. Professional Development, Education and Training The duties of this post will also include supporting primary care to manage the largemajority of patients with diabetes who do not require secondary diabetes care input.This will involve liaising with GPs and Practice Nurses, taking part in educationprogrammes for practice staff, responding to email requests from GPs and PracticeNurses for clinical advice. The appointee will take on the supervision of the GP vocational training post. Integrated Diabetes Team: Education, supervision, and regular appraisal3. Management and Leadership To provide medical information for the development of systems appropriate for Trustneeds To participate in departmental consultant and senior staff meetings whilst remainingwithin the framework of the agreed strategy of the Trust and the Department To attend other departmental, Divisional and Trust meetings as necessary To attend regional and national meetings as necessary To undertake all work in accordance with Trust procedures and operating policies4. Quality Improvement To promote evidence-based practice. To respond appropriately to NICE guidance. Tochange own and others clinical practice in response to new clinical developments To support the development of weight sensitive policies across Gloucestershire To undertake and supervise relevant clinical audit topics. To be involved in risk management and quality assurance To remain up to date and engaged in CME/CPD as per RCP guidelines. To respond appropriately to complaints and critical incidents The post-holder will be expected to take part in developing clinical audit inaccordance with agreed Directorate and Corporate Clinical Governance programmes. Teaching primary care colleagues, GP trainees, junior doctors and medical students,nurses, and other paramedical staff in the team in speciality and special interest5. Accountability The post-holder will be immediately accountable to the specialty Clinical Lead /Specialty Director. Further line management is provided by the Chief of Service formedicine and subsequently the Medical Director. Co-operate with the commissioning lead on budget issues. The intention is to have aprogramme budget for diabetes across primary, community and secondary care.
