Summary
Contract type: Fixed term apprenticeship contract (18 months)
Colchester City Council is committed to delivering high-quality and accessible services to residents, visitors and businesses. As a local government authority, we provide a diverse range of public and commercial services across Colchester, the second largest district in Essex.
Join us as a Digital Content Designer Apprentice and kick‑start your career in digital. You’ll learn how to create clear, engaging online content and help make a real difference by improving the web experiences our residents rely on every day.
Duties of the role
As part of the Digital Web Team, you’ll learn how to plan, write and edit web content that follows Government Design Standards (GDS) — national guidelines that help public services present information clearly and consistently. You’ll also apply GOV.UK writing style and important accessibility rules (WCAG) to make sure our online content is simple, inclusive and easy for everyone to use. You’ll gain hands‑on experience using Content Management Systems like WordPress and LocalGov Drupal while helping to improve online journeys so residents can quickly find what they need.
You’ll take part in activities that help you understand what users need, support good web standards across our websites, and work with colleagues to create accurate, helpful online content. You’ll also help produce straightforward guides or resources that enable other teams to manage their own digital content effectively.
Qualifications and skills required
You should have an interest in digital content, writing or design, and be keen to learn new skills. You’ll need to communicate clearly, pay attention to detail, and feel comfortable using computers and picking up new digital tools.
A positive attitude, willingness to work with others, and curiosity about how people use websites will help you thrive. No previous experience is required — full training and support will be provided.
What we offer
The Council encourages all employees to maximise their potential. You will be entitled to join an attractive pension scheme and will receive a generous annual leave entitlement, including two extra company holidays during the Christmas period.
Other benefits include:
Flexible working
Gym, travel and online retail discounts
Excellent training, development and progression opportunities
