Summary

A Vacancy at Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.

Since 2017, perinatal mental health services have expanded nationally. Locally, Wave 1 funding supported the development of a comprehensive service for South Birmingham, followed by Wave 2 funding to establish services across the Black Country, West Birmingham, North and East Birmingham, and Solihull. All teams are multidisciplinary, including psychology, nursing, OT and nursery nursing specialists.

These teams work alongside the established 10‑bedded Mother and Baby Unit (MBU) and its Outreach Team, both commissioned by Steps Together, the West Midlands Perinatal Provider Collaborative.

The Outreach Team supports access to and discharge from the MBU, screens out‑of‑hours referrals, and assists with discharge planning. They provide specialist perinatal input to Crisis Response Home Treatment Teams, including assessments, management guidance, and support with inpatient admission. The team also supports women on adult acute wards, ensuring safe perinatal care and facilitating transfers to the MBU. They offer in‑hours liaison at Birmingham Women’s Hospital for women with deteriorating mental health and assist women in local parenting assessment units with existing mental health needs.

This post provides consultant cover for the MBU Outreach Team.

Some of main duties and responsibilities;

1. Provide expert assessment and treatment of women with a wide range of mental health problems during pregnancy and the post-partum period

2. Collaborate with other providers of maternal mental health care within Birmingham and Solihull and the West Midlands region towards more integrated referral pathways and patterns of care.

3. Provide psychiatric leadership and clinical expertise to support the work of multi-disciplinary teams. Contribute to the teaching and training of all professionals coming into contact with women during the perinatal period in relation to maternal mental health across the region

4. Provide evidence-based bio-psychosocial interventions to promote recovery and social inclusion

6. Responsible for the prescription of appropriate treatments, including drug treatments.

Aconsiderable amount of multi-agency work is envisaged, working with relevant health teams, other Perinatal mental health services, Home treatment teams, Community mental health teams and key agencies including Child Protection teams, Health Visiting Services and Public Health colleagues from the Local Authorities, close working with professionals at regional maternity hospitals, primary care – including NHS talking therapies for anxiety and depression workers, GPs and Children’s Centres, and collaboration with the voluntary sector. Training and advice for linked agencies will be an important role of the postholder.
