Summary
Job overview We are looking for enthusiastic Diabetes and Endocrine Locum Consultant to join our team at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust. The successful candidate will provide high-quality clinical care, contribute to service development, and educate and train resident staff. Main duties of the job This is a 10 PA post for a Consultant in Diabetes & Endocrinology. An opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and enthusiastic individual to further develop and maintain our high-quality local service. The diabetes and endocrine service allows exposure to subspecialist interests whilst also providing exposure to general medicine. The general medicine cover is split between consultant colleagues and involves ward rounds of 28 in-patients on our dedicated ward. Education and support of junior medical colleagues is important. Clinical advice support for other members of the multidisciplinary team is occasionally sought and is an important component (e.g. diabetes specialist nurses, podiatrists and midwives). Specialist diabetes and endocrine ward consultations may on occasion be necessary. Flexible working is supported, and applicants are encouraged to discuss this directly with the speciality manager. The Trust is seeking a clinician committed to service development and interested in taking on active leadership roles within the department and trust. We are happy to support the development of subspecialist interests, including development of an insulin pump service. There will be requirement to undertake outpatient clinics each week across our hospital sites, Princess Alexandra Hospital main site, St Margaret’s Hospital, Epping or Herts & Essex Hospital, Bishops Stortford. On-call arrangements Frequency and category of on-call duties will be agreed as part of the job plan. Appropriate support and rest arrangements are in place in line with national guidance. The new post holder will be expected to take part in the physician of the day on call rota, which is currently 1 in 12 on call, on site for 12 hours when on call at weekends The acute physician does post take ward rounds with the junior staff in the morning (approx. 8 am), and sees acute patients throughout the day. The Physician of the Day takes over at 17.00 in the evening and is present until handover completes at 21.30. The physician remains on call until 8 am the following day. There is acute physician cover on Saturday and Sunday with responsibility for patients in EAU/Medical Short Stay. The Physician of the Day post-takes all patients admitted to the medical wards and continues to carry out consultant review of all the patients seen that day on the medical take. It is the requirement that the Physician of the Day on-call is on site between the hours of 08.00-21:00 at weekends and 17.00-21.30 weekdays. The predictable and unpredictable emergency workload on the 1 in 12 rota is covered by 1 PAs. This job description may be subject to change according to the varying needs of the service.
