Summary

To obtain clinical information on newborn babies and identify which babies require screening. Prioritise those for whom screening is more urgent in line with national and departmental procedures reporting any queries to the NHSP Co-ordinator. To liaise effectively with parents, screening team members, ward staff, medical staff and other health care professionals. To provide information to parents to enable them to make an informed choice on behalf of their baby with regards to having their hearing screened. To overcome communication difficulties with parents who may themselves have hearing impairment or learning difficulties. To obtain informed consent for the tests. To carry out standard screening hearing tests on babies.To assess how settled the baby is, the ear probe, sensor and ear cup placement and the environmental conditions, and to ensure optimum testing conditions. To always ensure the safety and security of equipment and report any problems to the Hearing Screening Local Co-ordinator as soon as possible. To interpret the results of the tests. To report any difficulties in carrying out the tests, anomalous results or difficulties of interpretation to the Hearing Screening Manager and to follow their advice. To always maintain the confidentiality of the babies and their families. To make appropriate onward referrals for further screening tests, in-depth Audiological tests, other diagnostic tests or follow-ups, based on the screening test results or following failure to obtain consent for testing. To input data accurately via a PC to the NHSP national database. To be responsible for inputting data accurately via a computer into theNewborn Hearing Screening Programme national database, ensuring it is complete and up to date. To change ear tips and couplers on testing equipment. To ensure that the equipment is handled with care and is always secure particularly when being transported to other sites. To report any equipment problems to the Hearing Screening Manager at the earliest opportunity. To ensure equipment is calibrated on a daily basis. Be aware of child protection issues and adhere to local procedures.
