Summary
We are looking for an experienced phlebotomist to fill apart-time(17.5 hours per week)permanentposition and join our friendly team. We are a dynamic department and would like to hear from suitable qualified people. You will have had recent phlebotomy experience with minimum of 1year adult and 6 months paediatrics phlebotomy experience and are expected to complete our local competency assessments.
The successful candidate will have a flexible approach to duties.
An essential requirement of the post is an ability to deal with patients in a confidential, professional, and sensitive manner.To participate in the provision of a high-quality phlebotomy service to paediatric and adult patients in all locations as required inc. Mental Health Hospital.
To manage and prioritise workload in various clinical areas. To be involved in the training of other staff where appropriate.
The main duties of the post holder is to collect blood samples from patients in all wards and clinics as required, including isolation,paediatricand outlying units as requested by anauthorisedofficer, by means ofvenepuncture, skin puncture or otherauthorisedmethods, using the method most appropriate to the individual patient’s needs and requirements.

1. Ensure effective communication with all staff, patients and relatives, maintaining confidentiality at all times.
1. Ensure effective and sensitive communication with patients, parents, paediatric and mental health patients using tact, reassurance and persuasive skills when needed in gaining trust and acceptance from patients prior to proceeding with the phlebotomy procedure.
1. Ensure that all relevant information is relayed to clinical, nursing or laboratory staff in a timely manner.
1. Assist in routine clerical duties, such as reception desk duties, helping patients with check-in & booking appointments online, receiving calls/messages, and relaying messages in a timely and appropriate manner, and use of the Cerner Millennium electronic clinical system.
1. Demonstrate customer care skills when listening to concerns, dealing courteously with visitors, staff, or patients and when using the telephone.
1. Use information and computing technology skills to access information about the Trust.

1. Co-operate with clinical colleagues to understand their roles within the team and appreciate patient priorities.

1. Ensure that the immediate work area (cubicles, trolleys etc.) are cleaned, disinfected and re-stocked regularly, and that the required cleaning standards are maintained at all times to prevent infection and increase patients’ confidence.
1. The post holder is required tofamiliarisehim/herself with and comply with the Trust’s policies and procedures.
1. The post holder must always respect patient confidentiality and in particular the confidentiality of electronically stored personal data in line with the requirements of the Data Protection Act (1998), the Caldicott principles and the common law duty of confidentiality.
1. The post holder must follow the record keeping guidelines established by the Trust to ensure compliance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

1. When moving people and goods, the post holder must complete the relevant training as appropriate to the action, e.g., use of hoists.

The post holder is expected to collect blood samples from patients in all wards and clinics as required, including isolation,paediatricand outlying units as requested by anauthorisedofficer, by means ofvenepuncture, skin puncture or otherauthorisedmethods, using the method most appropriate to the individual patient’s needs and requirements.
1. The post holder is expected to ensure that the required identification details are checked on every patient before the phlebotomy procedure is performed.
1. The post holder is expected to collect blood samples for a wide variety of tests, the correct volume of which must be collected into the appropriate blood specimen tubes. Blood sample tubes must belabelledwith the details of the relevant patient. If required, sample tubes should belabelledmanually with all of the required information.
1. The post holder is legally required to label all blood transfusion sample tubes manually legibly and accurately.
1. The post holder is expected to maintain the quality of blood samples at all relevant stages in line with established procedures and protocols.
1. The post holder is expected to handle and process blood samples in a way that:
a. is consistent with the indicated degree of risk or urgency.
b. maintains the required quality and integrity.
c. ensures that the samples are matched with the relevant forms and/or other documentation.
d. is appropriate to the nature and stage of a patient’s treatment.
e. is appropriate to the nature and condition of the sample.
1. The post holder is expected to participate in research, audit, and quality initiatives.

· There is a frequent requirement for continuous standing, sitting, and bending for long periods to perform the phlebotomy procedure when in outpatient clinic areas.

· The post holder is expected to have satisfactory levels of manual dexterity and hand/eye co-ordination to perform the phlebotomy procedure with the expected degree of accuracy and speed.
· The post holder is expected to be able to meet moving and handling requirements to cope with the physical demands of the post.

· There is a frequent requirement for the post holder to deal with vulnerable patients.
· There is a frequent requirement for the post holder to deal with neonates, very young children and vulnerable people, and their parents/careers.
· There is a requirement for the post holder to deal with patients and parents / carers who may be anxious or aggressive.

· There is a frequent requirement for the post holder to maintain, daily and for prolonged periods, concentration during the phlebotomy procedure, sample labelling and checking in busy ward and outpatient environments where interruptions and distractions are a common occurrence.
· There is a frequent requirement to be aware of children in the environment and to ensure that they are safe from harm.
· The post holder may have to adapt to change in short timeframes and be able to deliver outcomes.
