We are looking for a committed and proactive Divisional Market Inspector to help ensure the smooth, safe, and efficient operation of markets across the Borough. This is a key front line role that supports traders, engages with the public, and ensure the markets operate to the highest standards of compliance, customer service, and commercial performance.
The post is based at Todmorden and will be required to provide a visible presence on market days. Where you will uphold market regulations, support stallholders, coordinate operational activity, and help deliver a welcoming and vibrant marketplace for the local community.
Key Responsibilities
• Oversee the day to day running of markets at Todmorden.
• Ensure full compliance with market rules, trading standards, and health & safety requirements.
• Allocate pitches, manage trader arrivals, and support stall set up and breakdown.
• Carry out inspections, record incidents, and report issues promptly.
• Handle trader enquiries, resolve problems, and maintain positive working relationships.
• Collect and record fees accurately in line with council procedures.
• Work collaboratively with the Markets Manager to improve market performance and customer experience.
• Support enforcement activities where required.
• Assist with and develop events, promotions, and operational changes to help grow footfall and revenue.
About You
You will be someone who enjoys working in a public facing, fast paced environment and isn’t afraid to take initiative.
You’ll bring:
• Experience in markets, enforcement, facilities, or another public facing or event operational role.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to deal confidently with traders and members of the public.
• A practical, hands on approach and willingness to work outdoors in all conditions.
• Good organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks calmly and effectively.
• Understanding of health & safety and compliance (training can be provided).
• A problem solver’s mindset, with confidence to handle disputes or challenging situations professionally.
• Flexibility to work weekends, early mornings, or bank holidays when markets operate
