Summary

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Speech & Language Therapist to join the Neurosciences SLT team at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust on a one-year fixed-term basis to cover maternity leave. The post is offered at Band 6–7 depending on experience.

The expectations of the role will vary depending on banding. At Band 7 level, the post holder will be expected to practise independently in instrumental assessment and tracheostomy management. At Band 6 level, the focus will be on delivering specialist ward-based neurosciences care, managing dysphagia and communication needs within the inpatient caseload and escalating complex cases appropriately within the senior team.

Applicants should already have experience in the assessment and management of dysphagia within adult acute hospital settings.

The post includes senior clinical support and supervision within a large acute SLT department, alongside opportunities to contribute to the support of junior staff and students.

Informal discussions are strongly encouraged.

This role sits within a specialist neurosciences service providing Speech & Language Therapy input to adults with complex neurological conditions across neurology and neurosurgery pathways within a large tertiary teaching hospital.

The post holder will manage a caseload of adults with acquired neurological disorders presenting with dysphagia and communication impairments. The role requires strong clinical reasoning, confident risk management and the ability to work effectively within highly specialised multidisciplinary teams.

The position includes involvement in instrumental assessment, including FEES and videofluoroscopy, alongside tracheostomy management delivered as part of an established multidisciplinary team. Clinical input to patients stepping down from critical care also forms part of the wider neurosciences pathway, although the role does not involve primary caseload responsibility within intensive care.

To provide highly specialised SLT services (swallow and communication assessment and rehabilitation) to the Neuroscience Wards, including Neuro-oncology, Neurology, Neurosurgery and Neuro-trauma.

To take a lead in enhancing SLT services to Neurosciences, supporting and working alongside other members of the Speech and Language Adult Acute Team to ensure delivery of the highest possible standard of service.

To collaborate with the NCCU Clinical Specialist SLT to ensure effective two way communication and mutual support.
