Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Speech & Language Therapist to join the Neurosciences SLT team at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust on a one-year fixed-term basis to cover maternity leave.

You will become part of a well-established neurosciences service recognised for clinical excellence, instrumental practice, and strong multidisciplinary collaboration across neurology and neurosurgery pathways.

The role involves management of a complex caseload of patients with acquired neurological disorders presenting with dysphagia and communication impairments. The post-holder will be expected to demonstrate advanced clinical reasoning, confident risk management, and the ability to work autonomously within highly specialised MDT environments.

In addition to clinical responsibilities, you will provide clinical support and supervision to junior staff, including Band 5 and Band 6 therapists, contributing to workforce development within the neurosciences SLT team.

The post includes structured senior supervision, access to specialist CPD, and opportunities to contribute to service development within a large acute SLT department. Applicants should be able to demonstrate independent clinical reasoning in instrumental assessment, including report writing. Senior peer support is available to consolidate Instrumental assessment practice where appropriate within an established neurosciences structure.

Main Duties

To provide highly specialised SLT services (swallow and communication assessment and rehabilitation) to the Neuroscience Wards, including Neuro-oncology, Neurology, Neurosurgery and Neuro-trauma.
To take a lead in enhancing SLT services to Neurosciences, supporting and working alongside other members of the Speech and Language Adult Acute Team to ensure delivery of the highest possible standard of service.
To collaborate with the NCCU Clinical Specialist SLT to ensure effective two way communication and mutual support.

To evaluate the SLT Service delivery to aid identification and implementation of service improvement projects alongside the Clinical Team Lead.
To be an integral part of the highly specialised neuroscience and multidisciplinary team, including Consultants, Nurses, Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists working with them to improve services and outcomes.
To develop a long term vision for the Neuroscience SLT service delivery and to shape the service in a way that reflects that vision with support from the Clinical Team Lead.
To act as a resource for other therapists in the area of expertise.
To provide cover for the Senior Specialist/Clinical Team Lead in service and team co-ordination, operational management and representation at relevant forums as required.
