Job details
Are you passionate about delivering excellent customer service, confident in making sound decisions and motivated by helping people understand and manage their Council Tax? If so, this could be the perfect next step in your career.
About the role
As our Senior Council Tax Officer, you’ll ensure Council Tax and Business Rates are billed accurately and on time, managing a fast‑paced workload that includes processing account changes, administering discounts and exemptions, issuing bills and reminders, and supporting summons preparation.
You’ll handle account balancing, write‑offs and reconciliation tasks, helping us maintain high‑quality financial records. You’ll also support Local Taxation Officers with complex cases and provide clear, calm and respectful guidance to customers, often in challenging situations.
Working closely with colleagues across the Council and external partners, you’ll help resolve queries, prevent fraud and improve the customer experience. You’ll join a team that values accuracy, fairness and collaboration and you’ll have opportunities to share ideas, develop your skills and contribute to continual service improvement.
About you
You’ll bring strong knowledge of Council Tax legislation and experience of working in a Council Tax or similar customer‑facing environment. You’re confident explaining accounts, managing difficult conversations and making decisions based on clear evidence and sound judgement.
You enjoy supporting others and contributing to a positive team culture, and you’re the sort of person who stays organised under pressure while maintaining high levels of accuracy.
You’ll be comfortable navigating IT systems, communicating in writing and by phone and working collaboratively with colleagues across different services. You’re adaptable, constructive in the face of change and motivated by finding better, more efficient ways of doing things.
Above all, you’re someone who cares about providing a fair, respectful and helpful service to every member of our community.
Please note that this post requires a DBS check.
