Summary
Here at Newtown, we're fortunate to manage the only National Nature Reserve on the Isle of Wight. It's a beautiful retreat that has something to offer boat owners, walkers, wildlife enthusiasts and historians or just those in search of peace and tranquility. In addition to those who arrive on land, we also welcome visitors who visit by boat to enjoy the peace and tranquility of these beautiful surroundings. We're now looking to increase our team of Harbour Masters! You'll help us to manage the visitor experience on the estuary as well as making a valuable contribution to our conservation work.
This role is based on 100 annualised hours, where the amount of hours you work each month may vary, however your salary will be paid in 12 equal instalments over the year
What it's like to work here
You’ll become part of a friendly and dedicated team and get to meet new people on a regular basis. You'll also enjoy new experiences and learn new skills, whilst gaining personal satisfaction through supporting our cause.
Shifts will be determined by tides, weather and when boats are moored and will be set by the Harbour Master ideally with one month notice in advance. We will establish a team who can cover all times and this may require a certain amount of flexibility.
What you'll be doing
The Harbour Masters share important responsibilities including:
the safe handling and navigation of the National Trust boats and the daily running checks
ensuring the safety and well being of the volunteer crew member
making sure that people visit responsibly and safely, enabling us to maintain our beautiful estuary and look after the varied wildlife
collecting fees from visitors who are using our moorings
encouraging donations from boats that anchor within the estuary
promoting membership and raffle sales where possible
helping to ensure that all of our visitors have an enjoyable visit
