Role Summary
The post holder will provide senior clinical leadership and consultant level psychiatric care within the designated service. This includes responsibility for assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, risk management, and multidisciplinary team collaboration. The consultant will ensure high quality, patient centred care in line with NHS standards and GMC guidance.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
• Lead on the assessment and management of patients with complex mental health needs.
• Provide consultant level input to inpatient wards, community teams, or crisis services (depending on placement).
• Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments, including mental state examinations and risk assessments.
• Formulate treatment plans and oversee their implementation.
• Offer senior decision making support to MDT colleagues.
• Participate in ward rounds, CPA reviews, and case conferences.
• Provide clinical supervision to junior doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals.
• Ensure accurate and timely clinical documentation.
• Contribute to service development and quality improvement initiatives.
On Call (if required)
• Participate in the consultant on call rota as agreed with the Trust.
• Provide senior advice and emergency psychiatric assessments when on call.
Subspecialties Covered
This locum consultant role may involve work across one or more of the following psychiatric subspecialties, depending on service need:
• General Adult Psychiatry (inpatient or community)
• Older Adult Psychiatry
• Liaison Psychiatry
• Crisis Resolution & Home Treatment Teams (CRHTT)
• Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP)
• Rehabilitation Psychiatry
• Forensic Psychiatry
• Learning Disability Psychiatry
• CAMHS (Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services)
• Addictions / Substance Misuse Psychiatry
• Perinatal Psychiatry
• Neuropsychiatry
Multidisciplinary Team Working
• Work collaboratively with psychologists, nurses, OTs, social workers, and support staff.
• Provide leadership in MDT meetings and clinical discussions.
• Support integrated care pathways across primary, secondary, and tertiary services.
Governance & Professional Standards
• Adhere to GMC Good Medical Practice.
• Participate in clinical audit, governance meetings, and morbidity/mortality reviews.
• Maintain CPD requirements and engage in appraisal processes.
• Ensure safeguarding responsibilities are met for both adults and children.
Person Specification
Essential
• Full GMC registration with licence to practise.
• CCT in Psychiatry or within 6 months of completion / CESR equivalent.
• Section 12 approval and Approved Clinician status (or eligibility).
• Experience at consultant or senior specialty doctor level.
Desirable
• Experience across multiple psychiatric subspecialties.
• Evidence of leadership, teaching, and service development.
