Summary

Teaching Assistant/1:1 Tutor – SEMH
Independent Specialist School – Bishop’s Stortford

An independent specialist school in Bishop’s Stortford is seeking to appoint a dedicated and resilient Teaching Assistant/1:1 Tutor to support students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

This is an excellent opportunity for a compassionate and proactive individual who is passionate about supporting young people who may have struggled in mainstream education. The school provides a structured and nurturing environment designed to help students re-engage with learning, build emotional resilience, and achieve positive outcomes.

As a Teaching Assistant/1:1 Tutor, you will work closely with teaching and pastoral staff to provide individualised academic and emotional support, helping students build confidence, develop positive behaviours for learning, and progress both academically and personally.

Due to the nature of the role, a full UK driving licence and access to a car is essential.

Key responsibilities

Supporting students with SEMH needs in both classroom and alternative learning environments


Delivering one-to-one and small-group tutoring support to help students re-engage with learning


Assisting teachers with the delivery of differentiated and engaging lessons


Supporting students with emotional regulation, behaviour management, and engagement


Building positive and consistent relationships with students to encourage trust and motivation


Helping to maintain a safe, calm, and supportive learning environment


Supporting off-site activities where required


We are looking for a Teaching Assistant/1:1 Tutor who:

Has experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs (essential)


Is patient, resilient, and confident managing challenging behaviour


Has a genuine interest in supporting vulnerable students and alternative education


Works effectively within a collaborative and supportive staff team


Is adaptable, proactive, and solution-focused


Holds a full UK driving licence and has access to a car (essential)


Is willing to engage in ongoing training and professional development
