Summary
South Derbyshire District Council is looking for an experienced and motivated Waste Supervisor to provide senior operational leadership across our frontline waste and recycling services. This is a key role in ensuring safe, legal and high-performing delivery across refuse, recycling, organics/food waste, bulky collections and container deliveries, while supporting the Operations Manager to ensure services are delivered within agreed budgets, standards and statutory obligations.
What you’ll be doing
- Lead and coordinate day-to-day service delivery across all waste streams, ensuring consistent standards, productivity and customer outcomes.
- Provide operational direction and line management to 4 Refuse Team Leaders, setting expectations, monitoring delivery and intervening early to prevent service failure.
- Own the daily/weekly operational plan, including contingency arrangements for sickness, severe weather, vehicle downtime and peak demand periods.
- Ensure robust start/finish controls (briefings, depot reporting, sign-in/out, end-of-day checks) and compliance with working time and contractual hours.
- Drive a ‘right first time’ culture, reducing repeat visits, missed collections and avoidable service recovery activity.
- Act as the senior operational lead for health and safety, ensuring safe systems of work and risk assessments are implemented, reviewed and embedded.
- Lead or support investigations into accidents, incidents and near misses, ensuring corrective actions are implemented, recorded and reviewed.
- Act as the senior operational escalation point for complex complaints, recurring service failures and Member enquiries, ensuring evidence-led resolution and clear communication.
What we’re looking for
- Significant operational experience in waste/refuse/recycling or a comparable frontline service.
- Demonstrable supervisory experience managing crews/rounds and achieving daily service delivery.
- Good working knowledge of operational health and safety (risk assessments/SSoW, traffic management, manual handling, PPE).
- Competent IT skills for reporting, audits and maintaining accurate records.
- Full UK driving licence.
