We are looking for Traffic Management & Road Safety Engineers to join the Traffic Engineering team in the Network Strategy Group within the Highways and Transportation service unit.

Hybrid working – home/county wide with the expectation to travel to Northallerton for monthly meetings. Site visits are required.

Our Service

The core function of our Traffic Engineering team is to deliver capital‑funded local safety schemes to reduce the number and severity of casualties arising from road collisions, to undertake road safety audits on highway improvements, and to carry out fatal collision inspections and reports.

We also produce and update traffic management and road safety engineering policy, improve the efficiency of traffic signal installations in North Yorkshire by addressing congestion and safety issues at problem locations, maintain and improve the condition of existing traffic signal installations, and monitor the performance of the traffic signals maintenance contractor. In addition, we provide parking expertise and lead on the delivery of high‑profile parking projects.

Responsibilities also include a countywide review of speed limits and the maintenance of street nameplates.

The Role

As our Traffic Management & Road Safety Engineer you will identify and develop Local Safety and Collision Prevention Schemes, undertake Road Safety Audits and Fatal Collision Inspections.

You will prepare and consult on the design of schemes within the Integrated Transport Capital Programme and be responsible as necessary for the design of traffic engineering measures, including road safety, traffic management and parking studies.

You will be responsible for the preparation of traffic sign design and schedules and assist in ensuring schemes comply with the Local Transport Plan and supplementary documents.

The post holder will produce and update traffic management and road safety engineering policy.

You will also draft Speed Limit Traffic Regulation Orders under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. Liaise with Legal Services to ensure all orders are legally sealed and compliant. The successful candidate will also be responsible for the ordering of replacement street nameplates, liaising with manufacturers and contractors.

What you will bring

Experience in Collision investigation studies and safety schemes including traffic calming
Experience in the preparation or participation of Road Safety Audits
Experience within a highways related role
Experience in the use of ACAD and other ICT skills
Experience of Traffic Regulation Procedures
An understanding of local government administrative and financial procedures.
Ability to work as a member of a technical team
Excellent problem solving, analytical and organisational skills
