Summary
1. Purpose of the Role This is a 12-month fixed-term trainee General Practice Nurse post combining supervised clinical practice within General Practice, weekly academic study (FGPN), and participation in the Staffordshire GPN Foundation School. The post holder will develop the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours required to practise safely and effectively as a qualified General Practice Nurse. 2. Programme Requirements The post holder must: Attend university one day per week to complete the Fundamentals in General Practice Nursing (FGPN) Attend weekly Foundation School sessions (currently delivered face-to-face in Stafford) Participate fully in supervised clinical practice within the host practice Maintain NMC registration throughout employment Be able to travel between university, training and placement sites The first six months of employment constitute a probationary period. 3. Professional Responsibilities The post holder will: Practise in accordance with the NMC Code Work within scope of competence and seek supervision appropriately Maintain continuing professional development Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams Apply evidence-based practice to clinical decision-making Contribute to quality improvement and service development initiatives 4. Clinical Responsibilities (All elements are developed progressively during the programme under supervision) The post holder will: Deliver safe, evidence-based patient care Develop competence in Long Term Condition management Administer immunisations and injections under PSD/PGD (following training) Contribute to vaccination programmes Undertake opportunistic screening Learn cervical cytology Provide health promotion and personalised care Apply safeguarding policies and local referral procedures Maintain infection prevention and control standards Manage emergency presentations within competence Maintain annual resuscitation and anaphylaxis competencies Support achievement of quality indicators and contractual targets 5. Education & Training Responsibilities The post holder will: Engage fully in academic study and supervised practice Participate in peer support, supervision and preceptorship Complete mandatory training Participate in appraisal Contribute to maintaining high professional standards 6. Accountability & Supervision The post holder is professionally accountable for their practice as an NMC registrant and must maintain current registration. Clinical supervision will be provided by an experienced General Practice Nurse. A learning agreement will be in place between the post holder and supervising practice. Medical indemnity is provided via the Clinical Negligence Scheme for General Practice. 7. Governance & Professional Standards The post holder is required to: Comply with health and safety legislation Maintain confidentiality and adhere to GDPR requirements Maintain accurate, contemporaneous clinical records Report risks, incidents and near misses appropriately
