The Senior Mental Health Liaison Practitioner is a clinical specialist with responsibility for services to Mentally Disordered Offenders or suspected offenders and Court Liaison as an accountable, autonomous health care practitioner.
The post holder will lead on elements of a programme designed to improve the mental healthcare of patients, awareness of mental health matters in criminal justice settings and awareness of criminal justice matters in mental health settings
They will undertake comprehensive mental health assessments for patients with complex and/or challenging presentations and formulate a working diagnosis in collaboration with the patient and give advice about on-going treatment, management and discharge.
The post holder will provide excellent inter agency and liaison skills, andoffer specialist clinical advice to the Crown Prosecution Service, Probation, Police and others to assist in making recommendations to the Court.

The post-holder will:
• Support and be available to supervise staff in the triage, screening and assessment process of individuals who present with the full range of mental health problems including dementia with associated challenging behaviour
• They will be required to make clinical decisions and judgements that are complex and which require an ability to interpret complicated situations and clinical and social scenarios where a range of options and the implications of these have to be considered
• Be responsible for the full assessment of care needs of patients presenting with a wide variety of clinical conditions without direct supervision. They will be responsible for planning and referring on for appropriate follow up where necessary
• Provide a comprehensive consultation-liaison service to both colleagues in mental health services and criminal justice colleagues , particularly in assisting them develop emergency plans of care and in making difficult decisions in cases where patients are exhibiting complex psychosocial needs and/or challenging behaviours
• Liaise and maintain contact with the Police, Crown Prosecution Service, Bail Information Officers, Courts, Probation, Social Services, the client’s GP, Reaside (Medium Secure Unit), other specialist in-patient services, the Trust’s Mental health Services and the voluntary and independent sector.
• Promote community safety (individuals, public and Trust staff) generally and/or via the local Multi Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) dealing with particularly high risk cases that are often complex and sensitive.
• Participate in the assessment of need, discharge planning and resettlement as prescribed in the Trust’s Care Programme Approach policy and procedures. Assessments may take place in a variety of settings including mental health services, police custody suites, prisons and secure settings.
• Facilitate teaching and professional development to staff and criminal justice colleagues, both in formal and informal settings. This will include pre-registration students.
The post holder represents the Mental Health Trust in the criminal justice setting and will play a vital role in communicating and maintaining positive working relationships between the Trusts.
• Work with colleagues to develop and promote the service’s philosophy, framework of care delivery and strategic objectives, taking responsibility for specific areas of policy and strategy delivery.
• Be responsible for delivery of criminal Justice Liasion Service in Coventry, though there may be occasions when the post holder will cover Nuneaton, Rugby and Leamington Justice Centres.
