Oak Tree Ward is a 17 bedded Older Adult Mental Health Inpatient unit. We are a service for those mainly over the age of 70 (Although we are an ageless service), those living with cognitive impairment, or those with a high frailty score over 6.We are an assessment ward- accepting people for admission from Home, Care homes, Acute hospitals.

We support service users with; Anxiety, Bi-polar, Depression, Dementia, Parkinsons, Personality Disorder, Schizophrenia.

We have a varied Multi-disciplinary team; Consultant psychiatrist, Junior Drs, Ward Manager, Mental Health nurses, Dual trained nurses, Nurse Associates, Healthcare Support workers, Occupational therapists and physiotherapist.

The successful applicant may have contact with patients or service users. As an NHS Trust we strongly encourage and support vaccination as this remains the best way to protect yourself, your family, your colleagues and of course patients and service users when working on our healthcare settings.

Each day with have nurses and healthcare support workers working on shift patterns to provide constant 24/7 support for our clients.

This job role involves working under the supervision or registered nurses to support our clients to achieve their day-to-day needs, such as;

Washing and dressing- ensure all patients are offered support with a shower, changing their clothes, maintaining oral hygiene and supporting as needed.

Ensuring all patients are supported with their toileting needs throughout the day, to prevent incontinence and skin breakdown .

Monitoring patient finger and toe nails and offering nail care when needed.

Maintaining adequate dietary intake, by monitoring all patients having meals, documentation and reporting any concerns around refusal, supporting patients to eat their meal when required.

Undertaking patient vital signs, being aware of NEWS2 and the correct ranges and how to escalate concerns to nursing and medical teams.

Observing patients on different levels of observations, including constant supervision.

Maintaining documentation such as observations, fluid chart, NEWS2 scores, stool chart, sleep chart.

There will be opportunities to develop your skills through mandatory trainings, ECG training, Venepuncture training.

Band 3 Health Care Support Workers, work closely with people who use our Services, their families, friends and carers and play an important contribution in how people experience our services. Band 3 Health Care Support Workers are expected to be kind and responsive but professional and informative and contribute to the quality of the services. Band 3 Health care Support Workers are expected to report any concerns to Nursing and Medical teams, this includes safeguarding concerns, physical health concerns, to document these concerns and can contribute to referrals and assessments as needed.

This post covers both day shifts- 07:30am- 8pm, Early shift- 07:30- 15:30, Late shift- 12pm- 20:00 and night shifts 19:30-8am.

Supporting our patients with all aspects of their care to maintain their health and dignity whilst on the ward.

Speak up and raise concerns around safeguarding and abuse when suspected.
