Summary

About the role Applications are invited for a full time Consultant post in Respiratory Medicine. The successful candidate will join a team of 18 consultants at the Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust. Our team provides general and specialist in-patient and out-patient services including: • a specialist sleep service caring for sleep apnoea and other sleep disorders (5000 patients on CPAP) • a home ventilation service (350 patients on home ventilation) • a purpose built dedicated 14 bed Acute Respiratory Care unit for patients requiring acute NIV, acute CPAP, HFNO etc. • a large lung cancer service with thoracoscopy and endobronchial ultrasound (about 500 new cancers pa) • a comprehensive lung cancer multi-disciplinary meeting with close links to thoracic surgery • a nationally recognized asthma service • specialist services for interstitial lung disease and tuberculosis Duties will be based primarily on our Pinderfields Hospital site although all our medical staff are involved in delivering care to patients on all our sites, namely Dewsbury Hospital and Pontefract Hospital. Main duties of the post are to include delivery of outpatient clinics (general and specialist), inpatient respiratory work including the Acute Respiratory Care Unit and on-call duties. The Respiratory team at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust is dynamic, consisting of consultants and specialist nurses with varied specialist interests. The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop subspecialty interests and our Trust supports personal development in these and other areas such as education and research. We are excited to include in this post some GIM training time for those clinicians who are dual accredited in Respiratory and GIM. Main duties The main duties of the post will include • Outpatients (general and specialist) • Inpatient respiratory work including the Acute Respiratory Care Unit (Respiratory Level 1 Unit) • Urgent and Emergency Care duties for respiratory medicine including out-of-hours on-call; schedules will take due account of the provisions of working time regulations and safe working • On-call duties are currently shared with 16 other colleagues on a specialist respiratory rota, currently assessed as 1 PA to cover post take ward rounds and evening work. On call commitments are as follows: Weekday evening work 3hrs post take ward round 1 in 16 weekdays. Weekend work 7hrs post take ward round/ward cover 1 in 8 weekend days. Overnight on call 1 in 16 days. Category A intensity. Time off in lieu will be arranged via the job planning process • Supporting Professional Activities in accordance with the Trust Framework for revalidation, with at least 1.5 SPA included in the core 10PA timetable. Additional SPA or DCC time may be commissioned in line with the skills of the successful candidate and changing requirements of the service. Examples may include formal teaching responsibilities or departmental leadership roles. Many in the department pursue research interests and/or have a strong commitment to service development and teaching; applicants with a shared enthusiasm for these areas are encouraged. • In 2024/25, Respiratory Medicine cared for 4,408 new outpatients and 6,912 follow-up patients. Essential person specification requirements To meet the requirements of this role, applicants must demonstrate the following essential criteria: Full GMC Registration with licence to practise Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register for Respiratory Medicine or within 6 months of obtaining CCT (or CESR / equivalent) Medical Degree from recognised medical school MRCP or equivalent Training in respiratory medicine Eligibility to work in the UK Demonstrates intelligent and analytical approach to problem solving. Good time management. Ability to contribute to the development of the Trust and its services. Able to communicate clearly and effectively with staff and patients.
