As a Carpenter in our Health team at Great Western Hospital, you’ll play a hands‑on role in maintaining the building fabric that keeps essential healthcare environments running safely and smoothly. Your work will help make sure colleagues, patients, and visitors experience safe, well-maintained spaces every day.
You’ll be contributing to work that directly supports patient care and the wider community. By helping maintain critical hospital facilities, you’ll play a part in creating a future where essential services can operate with resilience, safety, and pride.
What you’ll do as a Carpenter You’ll be entrusted to:
- Carry out reactive repairs, fault finding, servicing, commissioning and maintenance to a wide range of services, plant and equipment throughout the hospital
- Complete Planned Preventive Maintenance across a broad range of plant and equipment
- Use a variety of carpentry tools and electrical saws confidently and safely
- Undertake fire door maintenance, inspections and fire-stopping tasks
- Support any additional duties within your competence and skill set
- Work in line with all relevant Serco policies, workplace regulations and best practice guidelines
- Proactively contribute to the review and development of health and safety systems and working practices
- Work responsibly with regard to your own and others’ safety at all times
- Attend work in line with the Computerised Time and Attendance System
- Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required
- Work additional hours where reasonably requested in exceptional circumstances
- Communicate outstanding faults, defects, or parts requirements to supervisors or managers
- Attend on‑site and off‑site training as required
- Understand how your work supports the Great Western Hospital contract and broader company objectives
- Take on Authorised Person duties when trained (e.g., working at height or confined spaces)
- Support painting and decorating tasks where necessary
- Work shifts or overtime where required
- Follow the initial alternating shift: Monday to Friday, 7:00am – 15:30pm
Does this sound like you? You’ll be a great fit for this role if you have:
- Completion of a recognised Carpentry Apprenticeship or relevant structured training programme
- City & Guilds and/or BTEC certification
- Proven experience in a similar environment
- Knowledge and understanding of building services
- Strong communication and customer service skills
Vetting and checks: An Enhanced DBS check is required for this role. This includes spent and unspent convictions, cautions, and any relevant information held by local police, in accordance with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and safeguarding requirements. You will also complete an Occupational Health Questionnaire to allow us to provide any support needed for you to succeed in the role.
