About the Role:

Technical Licensing Officer. The Location is Selby (Central area). Hybrid working available once established in role.

The Licensing Service carries out an important regulatory function, undertaking a range of duties to help ensure public safety and support business throughout the North Yorkshire Council area.

The role involves providing excellent customer service across the full range of local authority licensing functions, including Alcohol, Entertainment, Taxis, Animal Activities and Gambling. This is a very varied and fast-paced role where full training and support will be provided.

The team provides advice and guidance, processes applications within legal timeframes, carries out inspections, and investigates complaints. This involves working closely with various stakeholders, including internal and external partner organisations such as the Police, Fire Service, and local businesses.

The role includes processing applications and producing licences within legislative timescales, inputting and interrogating statistical data, providing professional advice to licensing enquiries, arranging and undertaking face to face appointments, investigating complaints and responding to requests for service, identifying service improvements, and liaising with internal and external agencies.

Working with your team colleagues, this role is a fundamental element of the Licensing service. You will need to interpret a complex and diverse range of laws governing all the different Licence types and ensure that all statutory requirements are complied with. You will decide when licences are to be issued after confirming that all checks have been made in accordance with Law and Policy.

You will report to the Senior Licensing Enforcement Officer.

Excellent communication skills

Ability to multi-task and manage a varied workload in a flexible environment
Strong organisational Skills
Exceptional attention to detail
Be able to keep clear and accurate records
Good IT skills and experience in using Office applications, including Word, Excel and Outlook


Although you will be predominantly based in the Selby office, within the Central Area of Licensing, you will also be required to occasionally work from other offices in the Central Area which includes Harrogate. The cost of travel & time, whether by public transport or car, will be covered.
