Summary
We are seeking an experienced Senior Midwife to lead on infant feeding services and UNICEF baby friend initiative.
The Maternity Service is committed to achieving Baby Friendly Status within the Maternity Service and a key part of the role will be leading and progressing the project through to full achievement of BFI, within the identified timescales.
The post holder will demonstrate motivational approach to training, with excellent communication skills both verbal and written. They will be able to engage at all levels within the service to develop a service committed to best practice in infant feeding.
As a qualified midwife the post holder will be required to provide the necessary supervision, care and advice to women during pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period, to conduct deliveries under their own responsibility and care of the newborn.
The post holder will also be expected to travel between sites and attend meetings off site, they will participate in the Operational Management of the Maternity Service by participating in the Bleep Holders rota as well as working closely with the risk management team dealing with DATIX, concise reports, comprehensive reports and complaints. They may also be expected to work nights, weekends and on calls as the service requires
The post holder will drive the strategic vision and delivery of UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) standards across maternity services at Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust, ensuring excellence in infant feeding support and practice.
You will champion high‑quality staff training, lead on clinical practice improvements, and oversee robust audit and data collection processes. By promoting best‑practice standards throughout the maternity unit, they will help shape a consistently outstanding experience for all families.
As the Specialist Infant Feeding Midwife, they will act as the Trust’s expert lead for developing evidence‑based guidelines and policies on infant feeding. You will provide specialist knowledge, inspire colleagues through expert role‑modelling, and ensure every woman receives personalised, compassionate, and consistent support—whether breastfeeding, unable to breastfeed for medical reasons, or choosing an alternative feeding method. Their leadership will ensure that all feeding choices are respected, supported, and empowered.
