Summary

We are looking for a very experienced, calm and confident female Personal Assistant to support our mum, Tracy, in her home in Hove.

Mum is a bright, warm and once fiercely independent woman who now lives with severe and advancing memory and cognitive impairment. She no longer has capacity to make most decisions about her care and safety, so we are looking for someone who truly understands what that means in practice — not just in theory. Mum continues to find laughter and joy in life, is very talkative and loves reggae music, art, outings and anything skull themed!

In addition to her cognitive decline, Mum also has physical care needs, reduced mobility and ongoing mental health challenges. She requires support with personal care and safe movement, and she can become anxious or distressed. For this reason, holistic care is absolutely vital — her cognitive, physical and emotional wellbeing are deeply interconnected and must be supported together.

This role isn’t just about completing care tasks. It’s about holding boundaries with kindness. It’s about knowing when to reassure, when to redirect, and when to gently but firmly insist. Mum can refuse care, forget moments later, or become stuck in repetitive loops. She may also struggle physically with mobility or motivation. We need someone who can stay calm, steady and professional throughout.

What the role involves

Supporting Mum with personal care using a comforting but assertive approach
Assisting with mobility and ensuring her physical safety at home and on outings
Supporting her emotional wellbeing alongside her cognitive and physical needs
Taking her to appointments or out for a café (she loves getting out of the house)
Writing clear notes and communicating well with us, her other PA, and the care agency
Supporting with medication checks and administration of painkillers
Admin tasks; such as communication with housing association, care professionals, money advice, postal information etc.
Light cleaning duties and shopping
Being part of a small, committed “circle of support” around her
Mum still very much enjoys connection. She loves dogs, art, and talking about her young grandchildren. She responds well to warmth and gentle conversation - even on difficult days.

What we’re looking for

Significant hands-on experience supporting someone with advanced memory impairment
Experience supporting physical care needs and reduced mobility
A strong understanding of supporting a person who lacks mental capacity
Confidence managing care refusal and emotional distress
Emotional resilience and patience
Full driving license and access to a car
Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain one)
This role would suit someone experienced in dementia or advanced cognitive decline who understands that this stage of care requires compassion, structure and firm boundaries - and who recognizes that holistic care is essential.

We are a supportive and communicative family and want someone who feels comfortable being open and honest with us. Reliability is very important to us - consistency helps Mum feel safer.

If you feel you have the experience and steadiness this role requires, we would love to hear from you. Please send your CV along with a short note about your experience with significant memory impairment and complex care, and why this role feels like the right fit for you.
