Summary
The Medical Examiner Service at the NNUH is seeking experienced senior clinicians to join our team as Medical Examiners. We welcome applications from both Consultants and GP's.
Medical Examiners play a vital role in ensuring accuracy and transparency within the death certification process. This role requires senior clinical expertise, sound judgement, strong communication skills, and a respectful approach when engaging with bereaved families and external stakeholders. Medical Examiners are trained in both the clinical and legal aspects of certification and are supported to complete mandatory national training and the RCPath ME training day within the first three months of appointment.
Three Programmed Activities (PAs) are available on Tuesday AM and Thursday AM/PM. Medical Examiners work to a fixed annual roster (42 sessions per annum), based with the Medical Examiner Service offices on the main NNUH site. This role will require flexibility to support periods of increased service demand.
You will join a close team comprising six Medical Examiner Officers and twelve part-time Medical Examiners. We work in partnership with Bereavement and Mortuary teams, HM Coroner's Office and Registration Services to ensure families receive clear communication and reassurance during the initial phase of bereavement.
If you are a senior clinician seeking a purposeful role that reflects professional pride and meaningful impact within a supportive team, we would love to hear from you.
As a Medical Examiner, you will provide independent senior clinical scrutiny of non-coronial deaths in primary and secondary care.
• You will ensure the cause of death is accurate, appropriately documented, and communicated clearly and compassionately.
• You will review clinical records, liaise with treating teams to confirm the cause of death for the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD), and determine whether statutory referral to HM Coroner is required. Where appropriate, you will speak with the next of kin to explain the cause of death sensitively, addressing and escalating concerns.
• Working with Medical Examiner Officers (MEOs), you will identify concerns about care and ensure these feed into governance and Learning from Deaths process. You will support resident doctors to improve confidence and standard in completing MCCDs.
This role requires a senior clinician with strong independent judgement, professional integrity, and commitment to patient safety and quality improvement. You must be able to work both autonomously and collaboratively.
Key decisions include determining Coroner referral, agreeing or amending the cause of death, and escalating concerns about care or family feedback.
This is a role of responsibility and trust, suited to a thoughtful clinician committed to accuracy, transparency, and compassionate communication.
