Summary

Apply your engineering skills to cutting edge scientific research:

Instrumentation Engineer (Specialist Technician)

The University of Southampton hosts one of a few research groups in the world that collect marine electromagnetic data in the deep ocean. The University operates a deep-towed electromagnetic transmitter (“DASI”) and fleet of sensors that are towed behind the source to measure the electric field. This equipment is operated globally from research vessels, usually as part of international research collaborations. We are looking for an enthusiastic and versatile engineer, to be based at the University of Southampton’s Waterfront Campus, who will maintain and develop this equipment. The engineer will work alongside a small team of engineers working with related equipment. You will be responsible for mobilising the equipment for use at sea, leading a small team of engineers and scientists operating it at sea, and refurbishing it following use. This post offers global travel and working at sea, providing the key datasets required by scientists working at the forefront to better understand how our planet works. The post is fixed-term in the first instance but with extension anticipated if further project funding is secured.

To be successful you will have skill level equivalent to the achievement of HND, Degree, NVQ4 or basic professional qualification in technical, engineering or science and/or equivalent technical experience along with knowledge/experience of power electronics, analogue circuit skills and micro-controller embedded systems.

The University of Southampton is committed to fostering a culture of equality, diversity and inclusion. We welcome applications from suitably qualified candidates, and particularly encourage applications from candidates belonging to groups who are under-represented within technical posts at the University, including, but not limited to: people from Black and minority ethnic groups; and disabled people. The University is committed to providing equal opportunities for all and a range of family friendly policies, and we encourage staff to apply for flexible working. We are a Disability Confident employer and the University is a founding signatory of the Athena SWAN Charter and holds an silver-level Athena SWAN award. We are a signatory to the Technicians commitment and can provide opportunities for career development and mentoring.

Informal enquiries can be made to Prof Tim Minshull (tmin@soton.ac.uk).

The University is a signatory of the Technician Commitment and a partner affiliate of the National Technician Development Centre (NTDC). We are committed to supporting our technical staff and offer a wide range of opportunities including networking, mentoring, training, professional registration and career development. We really value all our technical staff and recognise the broad range of skills they have in support of education, research and enterprise activities. By joining you will be part of a bigger technical community, offering support and guidance.
