Summary


To work as part of the Perinatal Mental Health Service, whose purpose is to provide care for women with a moderate to severe degree of mental health problems during pregnancy and up to a maximum of one year postnatally. The post is based within the inpatient unit.

The Nursery Nurses role will predominately be to take the lead in assessing the emotional, practical and developmental needs of the babies and liaise closely with other disciplines working within the team to develop, deliver and evaluate care packages under the indirect supervision of a registered professional.
To support mothers in the general management of baby care, demonstrating an understanding of how this maybe hindered by the presence of a mental illness.

To assist in assessing baby’s health, well being and related needs and contribute to the planning, implementation and evaluation of care
Offer practical support and demonstration, in respect of all aspects of child development to promote a healthy lifestyle and the wellbeing of the baby.
To use therapeutic activities to achieve goals, to promote bonding and encourage interaction, and to enable mums to develop their skills to provide care for their babies.
Undertake play sessions and illustrate by example, appropriate handling and play activities according to age group and encouraging mums to understand the importance of play in a child’s development.
To advise and support mothers around a number of issues such as interaction skills, nutrition, safety, accident prevention, sleep problems, play skills and breast-feeding.
To provide information and guidance for mums regarding issues such as smoking, postnatal exercise and diet and other public health issues.
To assist in setting up and running support groups, sessions and education programmes for mothers, partners, carers and other family members.
To be involved in training and development of colleagues in all areas of baby care.
Contribute to child protection proceedings, such as writing information that will help form a report for the conference or review meeting.
