About The Role:

The company is looking for a skilled Design Engineer to design, develop, and modify company’s products and tooling to meet customer and business requirements. The role involves managing customer-led design projects from concept through to manufacture, ensuring designs are cost-effective, manufacturable, compliant with quality standards, and delivered to agreed timescales.

The Design Engineer works closely with customers, Sales, Toolroom, Production, and Planning teams to ensure customer requirements are fully understood and successfully delivered.

Key Responsibilities & Main Tasks

Customer & Project-Based Design
• Manage customer-led design projects from initial enquiry through to first-off manufacture.
• Design new products and modify existing designs to meet customer requirements and company standards.
• Produce and maintain project plans to ensure key milestones and delivery dates are achieved.
• Communicate project progress with internal stakeholders and customers through regular updates and meetings.
Product & Innovation Development
• Design innovative new product solutions identified through customer enquiries, Sales, or management initiatives.
• Identify new materials, processes, or manufacturing techniques to improve quality, reduce cost, or enhance performance.
• Ensure all designs are suitable for manufacture within agreed timescales and production capability.
• Build prototypes and support product testing to ensure designs are fit for purpose.
• Prepare user guides and installation manuals where required.
Tooling & Manufacturing Support
• Design tooling and fixtures to support manufacturing processes (e.g. forming tools, mould tools, jigs).
• Work closely with production and assembly teams to support new product introduction and resolve build issues.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives and design changes on existing products.
Technical Drawings & Data Control
• Produce high-quality technical drawings in accordance with BS 8888 standards.
• Apply appropriate tolerancing to balance quality and manufacturing cost.
• Maintain strict drawing revision control and document management procedures.
Bills of Materials & Systems
• Create and maintain accurate manufacturing Bills of Materials (BOMs) using Epicor and/or Excel.
• Ensure correct materials, operations, and documentation are specified for all parts and assemblies.
• Methodically set up new BOMs, ensuring completeness and accuracy.
Quality & Cost Management
• Work in accordance with ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems and internal procedures.
• Identify and analyse cost-reduction opportunities through improved product design.
• Collaborate with production departments to plan and implement design improvements.
Customer & Remote Support
• Support customers with technical problem-solving, including remote troubleshooting where required.
• Travel to customer sites (primarily mainland Europe) for design reviews, installations, or issue resolution when necessary.

Candidate Requirements

Education / Qualifications
• Minimum HNC / HND in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent industry experience.
• Engineering degree desirable.

Essential Knowledge / Skills / Experience

• Minimum 2 years’ experience in mechanical product design.
• Strong background in mechanical and/or electro-mechanical engineering.
• Proficient in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred).
• Competent in Microsoft Office applications.
• Commercially aware with an understanding of cost and manufacturability.

Desirable Knowledge / Skills / Experience

• Practical machining experience (turning, milling).
• Experience with MRP / ERP systems (e.g. Epicor).
• Experience with data management or PDM systems.

Other Requirements

• Full UK driving licence.
• Valid passport.
• Willingness to travel occasionally within Europe.
