Summary
Job Purpose: The post is commissioned by Luton Borough Council to provide Specialist Speech and Language Therapy intervention and support to deaf children and young people who are attending primary and secondary school age specialist deaf provisions and those who are on the peripatetic caseload of the Deaf Children and Young People Service. You will: Provide Speech and Language Therapy at a highly specialist level, within the area of deafness, functioning in partnership with other agencies and disciplines to support in theholistic assessment, diagnosis and intervention for children and young people known to theservice. You will demonstrate clinical leadership in deafness and represent the local team/service area in appropriate meetings to support and develop quality services for deaf children and young people within Luton in an integrated partnership model, where possible.Provide assessment, advice and therapy where appropriate to children and young people with hearing impairment with and without EHCPs across Luton Provide intervention and support to those deaf children and young people who attend deaf specialist provisions in the mainstream schools and those who are supported by peripatetic Teachers of the Deaf either in their home environment or in their pre-school or school setting. To provide regular reports on activities and outcomes of interventions to LBC To identify, assess and diagnose communication impairments and select appropriate therapy for effective treatment. To provide written reports and contribute to the EHCP assessment process as required. Contributing to annual reviews/case conferences and meetings as required Make independent decisions about caseload management. Gain extensive clinical experience and expertise to improve and further develop specialist skills through training, support and study Provide second opinions to less experienced colleagues Be responsible for providing ongoing training and advice to the wider Speech and Language Therapy team, school teaching assistants/communicators SENCOs and teachers and volunteers Devise and deliver training to parents as appropriate. Deliver training within the school environment as required. Contribute to the support of newly and recently graduated SLT Staff Measure the impact of the work within the HIP service and provide reporting data as required. Take responsibility for service wide developments as appropriate. Communication Take a clinical lead role in service development in this area To represent the SLT service within wider local and national groups Have a specialist advisory role for the Trust in this specialty area, giving service widesecond and expert opinions. Independently take students on placement for clinical teaching and supervision, includingexam placement Take a clinical leadership role for qualified and unqualified staff working at lower gradesand volunteers. To ensure that own behaviour and decision making supports the equality, diversity, rightsand responsibilities of service users and professional colleagues. To present and communicate complex condition-related information in such a manner asto motivate and inform patients, carers, families and members of the multi-disciplinaryteam/other professions, agreeing decision-making relevant to patient management To use exceptional interpersonal skills to listen well and counsel families and carers, soproviding support and empathy without prejudice. To use negotiation skills to manage conflict as needed across a range of situations. Undertake annual appraisal and mandatory training and any other training relevant to the role as required by Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust.
