Summary

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

Could you lead a team in the acute medical unit (AMU)? Do you thrive in a busy environment? Can you confidently join post-take ward rounds and support prescribing activity?

We are looking for a Highly Specialised Pharmacist to join the pharmacy team for acute medicine. This job will be offered at band 8a depending on the required experience for suitable candidates who can thrive in this fast-paced and clinically demanding department.

This role is based on AMU and the surrounding areas, including the Emergency Department and the Same Day Emergency Care Unit. You will join the existing senior team members in delivering a robust clinical pharmacy service to acute medicine and will be an integral part of the AMU team.

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalizing your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

At UHS we’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.

At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognizing that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.

ABOUT THE TEAM

The acute medicine pharmacy team, like the department itself, is busy, flexible and responsive to ever-changing demands. These include review of prescriptions for new and discharged patients, requests for prescribing advice, support with use of the Omnicell cabinets which are used throughout the department, medication supply, and support for a wide range of problems and projects. You will join colleagues in being responsible for delivering excellent standards of clinical care to patients within AMU, ED and SDEC. The service currently operates from 7.30am - 7pm on weekdays and 9 - 5pm on weekends although this may vary depending on the needs of the department. You will be part of a well-integrated team, working closely alongside consultants and ward nurses. You will be well supported by a team of medicines management technicians and included in the wider Division B (Medicine & Elderly Care) pharmacy team where you will have the opportunity to meet regularly with the pharmacists, technicians and SATO’s within this team to have your say in the strategic and day-to-day operation of the pharmacy service to Division B.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

-Participate in post-take ward rounds with consultants.
-Make autonomous prescribing decisions, tailored to each individual patient.
-Support patient flow by organising discharge medications in a timely manner.
-Lead and manage projects to support service development.
-Support education and training of rotational pharmacists through AMU

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
An independent prescribing pharmacist with significant experience of clinical pharmacy.
Experience of change management and service improvement.
Ability to communicate well, inspire confidence and work well both independently and as part of a team.

Post-take ward rounds take place at approximately 7.30am. The post-holder will be required to attend these ward rounds on a reasonably regular basis, rotating with other members of the pharmacy team, as staffing allows.
